lady29 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 My daughter will be 8 years old August 13th. She is begging me to change her last name to my last name. I was told by a friend that I could go to the court house and add it. We live in Texas. Her father lives in Alabama. He has a new life there. He doesn't call much at all. She is not wanting her father. She doesn't want any part in her father. So what can I do with her last name. Please help
Craig Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Changing her last name seems reasonable to me given the circumstances. Make a few phone calls to the court house and find out how to do it. If your ex objects maybe you could just add you name and she could keep her 'old' last name as a 'middle' name to satisfy the ex.
Darkwall Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Provided you have full custody of your daughter I don't see why not, do it! Keep in mind how it would legally affect you receiving child support for your daughter. I'm guessing if you do have full custody than you have the right to give her any name you want. And depending on what the courts decided I imagine he would still have to pay child support for his child. I would triple check all legalities with the courts. You are the one raising her and providing for her. The only real hassle would be all the paper work and legalities involved. I have friends who now regret not ever changing their surnames to their mothers maiden name given that they had no contact or even close ties with their so called father. It's probably weird living with a name you don't feel a connection with.
