Walk Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 So, I was at the grocery store last night and ran into a old friend of mine, guy friend. Hadn't seen him in about 2 years. But he yells my name out in the store and comes over and gives me a hug. And says: "Wow, you're looking.." long pause, "buff". What the heck does that mean?? Buff. This is the same word I've heard from every male acquaintance/friend that I haven't seen in a long while. (All of them are married, don't know if that makes a difference) But I'm starting to think I look like one of those freaks on the cover of Muscle Women magazine or something. I don't work out. I ride my bike to classes, but that's the extent of it. I haven't lifted a weight in four years. Why am I getting the "buff" comment? And always the long pause right before it, like they're looking for a better word, but settled on "buff". I thought it was maybe a back-sided compliment, since married men can't really go around telling other women they're good looking... but then I started to wonder why they all choose to use the word buff. Specifically the word buff. If it were just one guy... whatever. But EVERY guy I used to know?!? Is it a compliment? Or the politically correct way of saying "freak"?
Woggle Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Buff usually means well toned and built. It is used to describe somebody that works out a lot and lifts weights. I don't know if that is what he meant but that the most common meaning.
Author Walk Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 I don't work out though.. I'm actually kind of flabby. Or rather.. uh.. Shapely. How's that.
jerbear Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Buff for a woman can be both good and bad. If you are a body builder or he-woman man hater, it would be good. Since you say you are flabby, it maybe improvement. Now since he has not seen you for over 2 years, its and improvement.
Author Walk Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 Hmm... I'm really not getting the sense that this is an overly used comment by most men. And it really doesn't sound all that positive. I haven't lost weight either. That's what confuses me. I've weighed the same for 12 years. 123lb. Men need to stop with the weird comments, ok? Just stop!
jerbear Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Men need to stop with the weird comments, ok? Just stop! I thought it was women who need to stop making weird comments!
superconductor Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Buff is good. Trust me on this. Buff is VERY good. (Then again, maybe you misunderstood him. Maybe he was saying, "I can see your muff." Were you wearing white shorts?)
blind_otter Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 (Then again, maybe you misunderstood him. Maybe he was saying, "I can see your muff." Were you wearing white shorts?) Hahaha. I always thought buff was good. But have you really ever heard anyone say "Nice to see ya! You're looking flabby!"
whichwayisup Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Buff is good! Take it as a compliment. Do you really think a friend you've not seen in 2 years, is going to give you a negative compliment?? Men don't DO that. (Though some women would! LOL) Remember, most men aren't bitchy and when a nice thought comes into their head, they'll let you know!
Author Walk Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 Hahaha. I always thought buff was good. But have you really ever heard anyone say "Nice to see ya! You're looking flabby!" HA! Superconductor: No white shorts.. but I figure the guys married with a one year old, so even if a girl had on lead pants I bet he'd still have muff on his mind. (probably not getting much at home right now.)
Outcast Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Um. 123 lb is hardly massive. Have you looked around you at other women lately? There's a lot of fatness these days. I'm thinking you look to be in much better shape than many, hence the compliment.

It was actually the incredibly long pause from "You're looking.." to the "buff" part, that hung me up. The long pause is included every time I hear this phrase... I could see myself doing that... "You're looking...." (thinking: wow he gained weight)......(dang, I didn't realize he had that big of a nose)...... "buff".
runner Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 i think you're just reading into it too much. he probably wanted to say that you look hot, but stopped short and tried to sound more friendly about it. just take the buff comment as a compliment.
LexiB Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 maybe they all noticed that you filled out on top more since the last time they saw you ~ ie, your boobs looked bigger(been wearing tighter tops lately?). Can't tell you you have a nice rack so they stop themselves short and say buff... haha, you never know ~ pay attention to their eyes next time!!
nicki Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 "Buff" seems to be a term guys use with each other, so it's probably a safer thing for him to say than: "Wow, you are looking goooood. Have you been working out? Your muscles are toned. You look even better than the last time I saw you. I'm getting a boner." I'm sure it's a good thing. Guys sometimes stop mid-sentence to catch themselves from saying something inappropriate. He is married after all, and polite.
