There are many reasons why people who are very intelligent do average or even poorly in school settings.

Test anxiety strikes a lot of people, usually those who are anxious in general. General anxiety and stress can keep you from remembering things you have read. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, formerly ADD) can be a cause although I doubt it in your case. It's more rare than people realize. A lot of people learn later in life that they are dyslexic, which keeps them from understanding and retaining material they have read.

There are a multitude of learning disorders which may be your problem. For a list and description of the more prevalent ones, go to:

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/learndis.htm#learn4

I recommend that you go to a school counsellor, or if you're in college, go to the testing center or other appropriate resource or counselling facility on campus and get checked out for various learning disorders, some of which I mentioned above. Again, don't rule out just plain old stress.

If it is stress, learning relaxation techniques and self hypnosis can go a long way to helping you retain more.

Also, understand learning is VERY state specific. In other words, if you learn something while you are intoxicated, you won't remember it when you're sober. If you study while you are very tired, you better be very tired when you take your test.

You may learn some hints on memory retention that may help you retain more. Neuroassociative conditioning and learning is a great way to recall information. Politicians use this technique to remember thousands of names of constituents, lest they lose elections. Seek help at your school on methods you can learn that will help you retain more. Once your brain gets the exercise, you will find it will automatically remember more.

You sound like a pretty sharp guy and getting to the bottom of this may be a real challenge for you...or it may be a very simple problem that can be easilly worked out.

Good luck and see a learning disability specialist as soon as possible. The link I gave you above should be a major help to you.

Very often, material on tests is not in the class textbooks and may be presented in vague fashion during lectures. You may need to develop the elasticity of thought required to deduce the answers based on what you have read while studying and heard in class.

School, and particularly college, is meant to prepare you for the cold, cruel world. Some teachers and professors absolutely love to give students a mental challenge during tests. That's what IQ tests are famous for.

Learn to take tests lightly, have fun, and let your brain wander to new dimensions when testing. And, of course, get some help as well.

I also wanted to mention that certain medications and medical problems can affect recent memory function. Beta blockers and some other heart medications are particularly famous for hampering recent memory function. There are certain over the counter drugs that can have the same effect. If you are on any medications, read about the side effects or talk to your doctor. Mitral valve prolapse has been found in research studies to have an affect on recent memory function...although researchers have no idea why at this time.

There are other factors that affect recent memory function in addition to stress and your test counsellor can discuss these with you.
