leopardprint Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I wasn't sure where I should put this; here or the water cooler. If a mod wants to move it, please feel free to put it in the best spot. Ok I need advice on tanning whether it be real or fake. I'm not one who was ever into tanning to begin with, however, since I'm half puerto rican, when I would just get slight tans from playing around outside in the summer, sports, vacations, etc, it would last for months, and even through the winter, so I never had a problem of having a nice glow. :blahblahblah: Ever since I moved to NYC, I haven't seen the sun since. I used to sleep all day and live during the night (night classes, work at night, etc), and even if I WERE up during the day, NYC gets NO sun because of all the buildings. So my body hasn't seen sun in almost three years. And it's showing! I'm as pale as EVER and it looks horrible against my dark brunette features. Now, I'm not looking to be one of those girls who's going to sit in the sun 24/7 every day and be either as red as a lobster or as dark as burnt toast. I just want a natural looking, golden tan. I'm up for anything: Sun tanning, Tanning Salons, or Self-Tanning Lotions/Sprays. Tips on sun tanning lotion and/or sun block and routines on how to and how long to sit in the sun, self tanners like sprays or lotions, how to use them, which are the best to use, etc, or even going to tanning beds or booths. Last summer, a co-worker of mine suggested this tanning salon. I went and they put me in a "Bronzing Bed" while using Swedish Beauty's Dangerously Dark Tanning lotion (I also still have plenty of this lotion). The girl told me it works great on people who want a golden tan in a short period of time (I went three times, three different days, for 8 minutes each), but after the third sitting, I came home and I was blochy around my stomach and chest, and it itched like a bitch! I'm a little nervous about trying that again - anyone have any suggestions on tanning salons? To be honest, I'd love to use a self tanner like a lotion or spray, because I really don't want to be exposed to the sun/UVs/etc. My grandfather just had surgery on his head for skin cancer from the sun, and my mother gets freckles from the sun INSTANTLY and I'm scared I might have the same condition since I'm her daughter. Thanks in advance everyone!
Outcast Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Tanning is unhealthy. Tanning salons are unhealthy. If you must, use the goop that colours your skin.

beachlover Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 HI- First of all I will tell you I have had skin cancer since I was nine, so I am biased in the fact that I do not reccommend sitting in the sun. Products that have worked well for me in the past: Jergens Natural Glow lotion... it is one that you use every day and you gradually get more tan, and this one has never left me orange. Coppertone tanning lotion (the light green bottle that had two tubes that merge into one pump... I can't remember the name) is good, it makes you more tan quicker, but it will make your knees, palms, elbows orange if you are not careful (I would reccommend to put a good lotion all over your body about an hour before you use it to pervent the color from absorbing too much in any one area) As another member posted, I have heard that mistic tanning is good, I have never done it because of the price. I hope one of these works for you. If you do decide to go outside and sit out, use at least SPF 15 sunblock (the new spray on stuff works well) and don't stay out for more than 45 minutes at a time. Make sure to put on the sunblock every hour or so if you do stay out longer. Like I said earlier I do not reccommend sitting out in the sun, but I know that most people want to so you should protect yourself from the skin cancer, especially since it runs in your family
allina Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 The tanning booth is the only way I go other than the sun. It's not the healthiest but I don't have a problem with doing it once in a while. I hated the mist tan, will never do it again. I also found that all the spray/foam/lotion stuff, no matter what it claims looks like crap.
luvtoto Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Try Neutrogena Mist Tan. Level 3. Dark. It dries in 5 minutes, gives a good color to your skin within three hours, doesn't cause breakouts or clog pores, no-streaking. Also, it's oil free. BUT, use a face mask while applying. Just so you don't breath in the fumes.
Author leopardprint Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 Thanks for all the info ladies! Yeah, I actually REALLY want to stay away from sun/tanning booths. I guess I should have just asked for sunless tanning solutions. My fault. A friend of mine recently recommended Hawaiian Tropic Island Glow. Any one else have any experience with this? I guess I should also add, I'm not really a white or pink skin tone, but more of a light olive. beachlover - I actually heard about the Jergens Natural Glow lotion - I read in a magazine that's this year's #1 sunless tanner (last year's was from Banana boat). And for everyone else; how long do sunless tanners usually last and how do you keep it up once you get the tone you like? Also, can you use these on your face/booty/breats?
beachlover Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Hi again- I have never used the Hawaiian Tropic Island Glow... but it is worth a shot... sunless tanners do not last incredibly long... all they do is put pigment into the top two layers of skin, these layers are completely replaced every week or so... so with that said you need to get tan by one of these methods then keep it up with something like the jergens natural glow lotion... if you use it every other day once you are tan it will keep the color in the top two layers about the same tone as you got to using the sunless tanner. When you do decide what to use here are a few things to keep in mind... 1. Use some type of exfoliating scrub everywhere before you use the tanning product 2. Wash your hands immediately after applying the tanner so your hands don't turn orange 3. if you do get any orange spots you can use a lemon, or lemon juice to remove the color and reapply it lighter.
