I went to get a phyiscal today for football. My mom got a call back with the doctor telling me I had high protein in my urine and high blood pressure. I dont know what this means... I think im a fairly healthy kid. I lift 3-4x a week and run almost everyday for football.

I was told that means you can get kidney disease and other crap. Im only 16 is this anything to be worried about. I did the urine test as soon as I woke up. Im pretty scared because I dont know what this means I just have to go back next week for another urine test and blood pressure check.

I'm not an expert...but are you taking protein powders or other 'performance enhancement' stuff they sell at the 'health food' stores? Maybe that's skewing your results, and raising your blood pressure?

I don't know if that's doing it, either, but it's certainly something to tell your doctor about! It's possible your body is just expelling all the extra protein it can't process, just like with megavitamins. There's only so much your body can absorb, no matter how much vitamins (or protein) you put into it.

I don't know if that affects blood pressure, though.

In the meantime, stop drinking the protein shakes and see if your test results change next week. But DEFINITELY tell your doctor about it. He might think there's something really wrong with your body that it can't process normal amounts of protein when it's just that you take too much of it.

As always, asking for medical advice on this site will get you nowhere. Our members mean well but having protein in your urine has absolutely nothing to do with protein supplements. That kind of protein is metabolized long before it might ever get into your urine.

Your situation may or may not be serious but you must get back to your doctor as soon as possible for more tests. If you want to read about the possiblities, go here ------ http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003580.htm or type "protein in urine" in a good search engine, such as one that rhymes with bugle...

Good luck and be sure you get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. Once you read the information at the above link, you will understand why we...as unlicensed, non-professionals...don't have a heartbeats chance of telling you what your problem is. Even a medical doctor wouldn't venture that without seeing you and performing additional tests.
