Trimmer Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 yes, regular exercises and a balanced diet and enough sleep is recommened for physical growth Well, I think we will all agree that keeping up that regimen will let your body grow as tall as it possibly can. Good luck, Andy... (And do talk to your doctor about these specific questions - we're just a bunch of talking heads on the internet. Your doctor can address your questions directly, and with an educated background. The internet is NO substitute for that...)

alwaybroken Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 height is passed down from parrents. I really dont think there is a magic combination of food to make you grow past what your DNA has in store for you. Have you been reading the other post? I think thats what everyones been telling you. If it helps you at all I was 5'10 when i was 16 and my final height is 6' (hit 6' by 18). So you probably have some growing left.
Author twkvfx Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 well i'm the tallest of the whole family by 4 - 5 inches. so i can't be inherited by genes. if so, then i could be at the same height as my parents.
josie54 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Andy, I think you want someone to tell you that the impossible is possible--i.e., that there's a magic pill you can buy at the drug store or some magic combination of foods and exercise that will make you taller. Andy, no one's going to tell you that. Anyone who tell's you that is lying. I wanted to be 5' 8" when I was a teenager--I just wanted to be tall (for a girl) and 5'8" seemed perfect. I grew to 5'5" by the time I was 18, and actually put on another inch and a half by age 21. I'm now 5'6.5" (as you can see, I hang on to that half-inch!) Nothing I did got me the extra inch and a half between 18 and 21, and there was nothing I could do to get to my "goal" height of 5'8". All I could do was to not actively STUNT my growth by doing stupid things like smoking, doing drugs, or eating poorly. You are essentially asking us how to change your natural eye color or skin color. You can't do it for real. For eye color, you can wear colored contact lenses. For skin color, you can use a tanning product. For height, I guess you can wear platform shoes, but that's about it, short of a painful surgery that involves bone lengthening in your legs--that no surgeon will ever do on a healthy 16-year-old! You keep asking about diet, and everyone keeps telling you: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (walk down the produce aisle at the grocery store for ideas), some whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and some lean meats. Don't eat if you're not hungry (you want to grow UP not OUT). Drink lots of water. Stay away from fatty foods, junk food, and sugary sodas, or consume them only in moderation. Stay away from tobacco products and drugs. Engage in an exercise you enjoy (jogging, raquetball, team sports, cycling, rollerblading, moderate weights, etc.) a few times a week. That's the recipe for a healthy lifestyle, so that you can reach maximum health. But it's not going to help you grow any taller, any faster than your body's already programmed to do. All you can do is sit back, wait, and watch where your height's concerned. If wanting to be taller were the key, I'd be 5'8" by now!
Outcast Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 well i'm the tallest of the whole family by 4 - 5 inches. so i can't be inherited by genes. if so, then i could be at the same height as my parents. Your genes go back through every generation. Your folks may not be tall, but your grandparents might be or their grandparents or brothers or uncles or even aunts or grandmothers might be. Genetics means 'family' not just 'parents'.
beachlover Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Andy- I have just read through this thread and here is my two cents... Your height is based on genetics (I don't know if you have been introduced to basic genetics in school or not but basically every person has two copys of each gene, one from mom and one from dad, in each person one gene is domininantly expressed, so even if your parents are shorter you could have family members somewhere that are taller and those genes will have some effect on you) As many others have said you can not induce growth, but you can inhibit it. If you stay healthy, eat properly and exercise regularly... and not sit on the couch eating potato chips and watching TV all day, you will grow to your potential height. From your pic you look like you are fairly healthy, and not overweight. As for a quick fix... there is not one, you just have to wait, you still have 4-5 more years of growth, and as long as you are healthy you will continue to grow if your genes will let you.
Author twkvfx Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 sorry i must of missed something out from my previous comment. when i meant by genes i meant parent genes. i'm aware of the "family" genes passed on through generations. both of my grandfathers were tall. thus my parents being small, whilst me the tallest. could my parents be carriers of height from my grandfathers?
westernxer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 could my parents be carriers of height from my grandfathers? They carry all sorts of genes, just as you do.
westernxer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 well i'm the tallest of the whole family by 4 - 5 inches. so i can't be inherited by genes. if so, then i could be at the same height as my parents. You're missing the point.
Author twkvfx Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 They carry all sorts of genes, just as you do. i know, but right now i'm focusing on the height gene. they can be passed down through generations. not always (can also) inherited by parents, or the other way round.
westernxer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 i know, but right now i'm focusing on the height gene. they can be passed down through generations. not always (can also) inherited by parents, or the other way round. It's like a lottery... you get whatever you get. That's it. Maybe things will change in a decade or two, when geneticists gain a fuller understanding of the human genome. They've barely scratched the surface... things are gonna get interesting. What we already know is nothing.
Trimmer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Yeah, it's not all as precise and specific as you are trying to make it, Andy. The height you end up is influenced by your parents combined genetics and influenced by your family history, but there is also a certain amount of random influence thrown in when your parents' genes are combined. There isn't a mathematical formula that we have yet figured out that describes the precise influence of the many factors that go into making up something like your height, and even if we tried, there is still that certain random influence that is always thrown in there. So it is somewhat pointless to ponder whether you will be exactly a few inches taller or shorter depending on precisely what your parents or grandparents were. There's always that roll of the dice thrown in there too. So the bottom line, as westernxer put it, it's a lottery - you get what you get and for your basic physical characteristics like height, eye color, skin tone, and many others, your ticket is punched when you are conceived. And again, as everyone on here has consistently said, the best thing you can do is what you already recognize: treat your body well and keep it healthy, and it will get just as tall as it's going to before it stops. Actually, there is one other suggestion I can offer, along the lines of something else westernxer said: take a lot of math and science in high school, do a 4-year undergraduate degree in biology or chemistry, then persue a PhD in biochemistry, a postdoctoral fellowship in human genetics, and get a prominent position in a university or corporate laboratory doing research on the human genome. Then figure out this whole height thing, and come back in 20 years and let us know what you have discovered. Of course even that still won't make you any taller.... Maybe for now just stick with exercise, nutrition and sleep...
Author twkvfx Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 are you saying that theres no way of overcoming all of this?
Trimmer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 are you saying that theres no way of overcoming all of this? Yes. You've got it. But my concern for you is that you think of it as something to "overcome", like it's a disease or an obstacle or something like that. I think the thing you have to "overcome" is the idea that this is a negative issue in your life. If you dwell on that, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You still have control over shepherding your body into the future and being as strong, healthy, and physically capable as you want to be. Focus on the person you want to become, accept and take good care of the body you've been given with whatever strengths and limitations it brings, and use it as a tool to accomplish the things you will do in your life. It may not seem this way at 16, but when you look back 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, you won't define yourself by your height. You will define yourself by the person you have become, by the relationships you have built with others, by your honor and values, and by the things you have done, powered by your mind, your soul, and your heart - not by the shape, size or color of your physical body.
westernxer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 are you saying that theres no way of overcoming all of this? Just wait until you start losing your hair.
Author twkvfx Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 wow, by judging the number of effort put into some of yours and some of others' comments i see that you guys cared, right?
westernxer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 5'6" isn't bad... that's average, and you may not be done growing yet. I always thought I'd be taller (like > 6 feet), but... Could be a lot worse, let me tell you.
hyakku Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 This thread has provided me with alot of entertainment lmao. Anyway man, I'm your age and I'm like 5'7" or 5'8", hoping to reach about 9 or 10 but I'm pretty ok with it right now. Anyway man, you can diet, eat right, etc, its not gonna make you grow quicker, its just going to ensure that by the end of you growing you will have gotten the maximum amount from your growth. Honestly man, just relax and wait, I know what it's like (I was short when others seemed to be hgue), but this is genetics, I'm sure you could find a way around it (breaking your bones and adding bone mass or something crazy like that), but you really don't need to. Good luck anyway man.
Citizen Erased Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Stand in a potted plant, make sure you are watered daily, have the correct amounts of shade and sunlight throughout the day... oh right you can't do that because you are human. There is no way you can affect your height. It just doesn't happen. Your genes are the only controlling factor and there is no way you can guess what the outcome will be. It could be worse. I am only 5'2. You would tower over me!
BUTAFLY Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Don't sweat it. When your older it won't matter much. When I was your age I hated my height, always the tallest one in my classes, gangly and ackward. At 29 I have blossomed embraced it and comfortable with it. It comes down to being comfortable in your own skin.
gig Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Heres a really good Idea Now listen carefully "Go Buy a Ladder and Go on it" Tada you are now officially Taller!!!
