lovestruck234 Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Ok I had NO idea where to put this thread, so I hope here's an appropriate place... I was just wondering. I notice that lots of my guy friends bring up the topic about hot vs pretty girls. Curious, what are guys attracted to more? I'v been told that I'm "pretty" but not really "hot", but I've also been told that I'm "hot" as well. They usually say that hot girls turn them on, but pretty girls are nice to look at and hang out with??????? I'm not sure if any of you are thinking how weird I am right now, but it's something I've alwasy wondered about. So do you prefer hot girls over pretty girls? Guys, let me know what the situation is...
Tony T Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I used to think "hot" girls were the ones ready for sex. Nowadays, a hot gal and a pretty one a mostly the same. Call yourself what you will. Some people will find you pretty and some won't. Some will perhaps think you're average. The guy of your dreams will think you're the most beautiful lady in the entire world and he'll pray you get "HOT' for his body quite often.
Author lovestruck234 Posted July 5, 2006 Author Posted July 5, 2006 And my bf thinks I'm the hottest girl in the world....QUOTE! That's all I need to know, and that he loves me! (sigh) He's so lovely....lol So, I've always thought that guys go for "hotter" girls rather than "pretty" ones....what's the deal?
witabix Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Its an undefined thing. Society defiens pretty, and society defines hot. I define what I like, and I have no way of putting it into words. It is more cerebral than physical. A womans mind more then her body. Having said that my shallowness is almost totally superficial.
Tony T Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 More people are shallow these days....it's the Greenhouse Effect.
magichands Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Paris Hilton is always saying, "That's hot!" Maybe if someone calls you hot, then they're suggesting that Paris Hilton would find you amusing. Pretty is a much more "sophisticated" word.
Pink Amulet Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Haha, good point Magichands. Women call me pretty, men call me hot. I tend to ignore them both. I don't need validation More than pretty or hot, I am told I am beautiful. Does that imply that your personality comes in to play? That's what I have been telling myself anyway I find it a much bigger compliment to hear words directed at me in regards to my work not my looks. They are the ones that really make me smile
allina Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I always thought that pretty or beautiful were intended to talk about a women's face while hot is used to talk about her body.
Pink Amulet Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Hmmm interesting theory Allina... *raises eyebrow and nods*
Curmudgeon Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I tend to agree with Allina. That's what the words have always seemed to mean to me. I prefer lovely, beautiful, enticing, desireable, etc. to either hot or pretty. A "hot" girl will not necessarily capture my attention while a lovely woman, inside and out, will do so every time. And lovely doesn't mean pretty. It's the whole woman who carries herself well, takes care with her appearance, can carry on an intelligent conversation and whose eyes reflect a kind, interested, engaged and positive outlook on the world and compassion for others.
Author lovestruck234 Posted July 5, 2006 Author Posted July 5, 2006 Hmmm...VERY intersting theories everyone. I guess that by pretty I meant beautiful as well. And yes Pink, you a VERY beautiful! Tee hee... I prefer to hear that I'm beautiful as well rather than hot. Awwww, Curmudgeon...that was really nice what you wrote! Very nice... But I tell you what it is? Stupid STEREOTYPES!! I hate how women / young girls are captivated by these picture perfect women in magazines/on tv. I used to be like that and compare myself to EVERY girl. My boobs are too small, my skin isn't brown enough...SO many things!! Then I guess I grew up. Once I left school and would catch up with friends, I was in awe at the fact that they were stil all like that, but I'd changed. I would be out with them and comment on how nice a certain thing is like on a girl in the street and one of them would say something like "Uh, she has pimples! Ew!" Like, who cares if she does!?!?! She's still pretty in her own way!! Argh! Yeah, I guess everyone is pretty/hot/beautiful in their OWN way. Yeah! I feel really good now! Lol
Pink Amulet Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Aww, you are definitely a sweetie. We need more people like you in this world.
blue16 Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 to me hot = girl you find very attractive and the first thing you think about it is wanting to get some of that pretty = girl you find attractive/appealing (and may even be more ashetically beautiful than a hot girl) but not necessarily has that trait where the first thing you think about is banging her. The best combination is a pretty and hot girl, which is very rare. You usually tend to find one or the other.
Pink Amulet Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I asked a male friend... "I always thought pretty girls had aesthetically pleasing features. They fit the mould of being attractive in every physical sense, but are often a bit plain. Hot girls on the other hand, often don't have traditionally beautiful features, but they take what they have got and they work it. They could have dazzling eyes, a lot of energy, a sexy sense of style and usually take alot of pride in their appearance. I prefer hot girls. They are more exciting "
HeyYouGuys Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Interesting topic... Well, I've always found some actresses to be very pretty but they have NO sex appeal Nicole Kidman, for example. No one could deny that she's attractive. But she is the most un-sexy person in the world. I'm not a lesbian or anything...but I recognize certain women as sexy and certain women as not sexy. My SO agrees with me. He thinks Nicole Kidman is like an Ice Princess. Another example of 'pretty but NOT hot' is Reese Witherspoon. I think she is a terrific actress and has a very cute face. My SO agrees. But she's just so 'clean cut' looking and just so....not hot. Melissa Gilbert, back in her earlier years, also pretty but not hot. In the 'not technically pretty but definitely HOT category' Penelope Cruz (funny nose, atrocious accent....but sexy!!!!) Pink (sometimes overweight, and always sneering.....but wickedly talented and takes no s***!) Fantasia (I saw her on TV last night, she is not pretty....but amazing to watch! Anyone with that much passion is hot!) I have never figured out why these people are considered 'pretty' or 'hot' by some because I don't think they're either; Sarah Jessica Parker Paris Hilton or Nicky Hilton Mischa Barton (OK, she's kind of pretty....but in such a bland, blah way! And her acting sucks!)
Author lovestruck234 Posted July 6, 2006 Author Posted July 6, 2006 I asked a male friend... "I always thought pretty girls had aesthetically pleasing features. That's very true. Although, I find not all pretty girls are plain. I think back to my main point, I probably should've said beautiful instead of pretty. As a girl, (not in a lesbian way) I find I notice a beautiful girl over a hot girl. HeyYouGuys, I find Mischa Barton such a beautiful person. I think she is so naturally beautiful is kind of nauseating. lol. But just cos she's, Mischa, she doesn't pretend. I think by beautiful, I refer to them as naturally attractive girls. I'm sure some hot girls are naturally hot, but I've yet to come across one. I think what's appealing is the natural side of you. I love seeing girls who get out of bed, and take 10 minutes getting ready and come out looking gorgeous. My bf reckons I can do that, but I think he has a very WARPED way of seeing me. Although hot girls who take alot of time making themselves look absolutely stunning are very impressive, you know it's not the real them. That's the problem with young girls, getting captivated by something that's not even real. My Aunty works for fashion and does alot of work in magazines, and even tells me that they PAINT ON some girl's featuresin magazines!! (Legs, boobs, EYES! Etc) And girls are hoping to look like that?? Ok, if they had Mr Squiggle as their stylist!! Lol That's just my opinion....
Alexandra Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I prefer lovely, beautiful, enticing, desireable, etc. to either hot or pretty. As a matter of fact, personally, I wouldn't be moved by being called either "pretty" or "hot". I expect those addressing me to come up with better adjectives;) . Possibly unconnected but I also strongly dislike "nice". Who invented that unimaginative word and why?
Blackfrost Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I much prefer pretty (and great personality) vs Hot (and how much money are you going to spend on me bitch personality)

And they paint away their flaws, too, including extra pounds, lumps, bumps, wrinkles and hair! All magazine photos are retouched in some way. The digital age has made that even easier.

Curmudgeon Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 "Nice" was invented for those who could think of nothing else "nice" to say about someone. I won't tell you what that was code for back in the 50s.
