Too Old to Flirt
Posted

I am a 48 year old divorced man. I work for a business that has a 26 yr old departmental secretary who has worked there for approximately one year. While she is not my personal secretary, I am one of the senior members in the business. Further, I have always found her pleasant and friendly. Indeed I liked her to the degree that I offered to allow her and her husband to utilize my Carribean timeshare for free since I had no plans to use it. I have witnessed other people in the company flirting with her since she is quite attractive, and I have found it amusing since she either appears embarrased or repulsed by their advances.

We have a very laid-back atmosphere at my workplace, and frequently the topic of discussion turns to relationships, dating, cheating etc. During one discussion I found that many married workers stated that they would have an affair if the opportunity arose, while I stated that if I were married again, I would never have an affair. I believe that if you are unhappy in a marriage, and cannot resolve the problem, then you should leave a marriage before beginning another intimate relationship. Since it appeared that I was alone in this opinion, I asked this pretty secretary what she thought, fully expecting for her to think similarly to me since I had often heard her speak affectionately of her husband (which I thought was sweet). Instead she stated that her husband had cheated on her in the past, and then after some pause she said that she would have an affair if the opportunity was there. I was quite surprised, but tried not to show it.

Since this discussion, I have had the impression that she has become more open toward me. She has asked multiple times when I will let her take care of my 7 year old son. Additionally over the past couple of days when the topic of dancing has come up, she has repeatedly asked me to take dancing lessons with her (since I can't dance). When I have asked her what her husband would say, she says that it is O.K. with him since he likes me (I have never actually met him). She is aware that I am involved in a long-distance relationship, and when I told her that my long-distance GF would never approve of me taking dancing lessons with another woman, she said "don't tell her." In the beginning I thought that she may just be joking about the dance lessons, but she is serious.

Is this woman flirting with me, or is this just an old man's imagination?

She's flirting with you. I think if you don't want the relationship to advance further, you should let her know, or just stop talking to her on such a personal level. However, if you are interested in her, then play it out; be flattered that a girl half your age is interested in you.
