I'm going on about one and a half weeks of partial, not so great sleep. Stayed out late last night hoping it might get me over that hump. Sleep comes for about 3 hours and then I awake and lay in bed trying to calm myself. Even with the late bedtime, I woke up within a few hours as usual.

The lack of sleep is definitely starting to show. I'm thinking of trying some aspirin with a "PM" formula to help me stay asleep. Any advice out there?

Talk to your pharmacist. When I have sleep troubles sometimes, I take antihistamines - but I should take them more often anyway because I have allergies. I think they're pretty safe but your pharmacist will be up on the latest and best safe sleep aids.

I have been in this non sleeping mode for about eight months now...

At times I feel like a loony bird from lack of sleep. Many days I need to lay down in the afternoon and take a nap, which I have NEVER done in my lifetime, and no I am not "old." Mid 40's - just a lot of stress keeping me awake...

Don't want to resort to those pills, so I just try to avoid contact with those I know when I feel overly tired.

Lack of sleep is dangerous when you're driving. Worrying about 'resorting to pills' is unwise, IMHO, when the alternative could be worse.

Sleep studies have shown that all humans, when left to their own devices (locked up in places where they can't see any clocks or know what time it is) will nap every afternoon. It's not at all the habit of only 'old' people. It's good for everyone.

I was in the same boat after my ex broke up with me. That first night, I went to bed and couldn't fall asleep. When I finally dozed off, I slept for about 3 hours, woke up and never went back. After a few nights of that, I bought some over the counter sleep aids. I took them and would fall asleep right away and then would wake at 3 a.m and stay up the rest of the night anyway. I went to my doctor and was prescribed something to help me sleep. I was a bit reluctant at first and figured, Well, if I can get a restful nights sleep, maybe I won't be dozing off in the middle of the day and needing a nap every afternoon. They really helped me and now, I've gotten to the point where I don't take them everynight. I know some people are reluctant to take them but, as I said, maybe it can get you back on a regulaer sleep schedule and "reset your clock". All the best.

Regards, GW

I am having the same trouble… A break-up after 5 years, I’m having a hard time with it. I make myself go out most night to keep my mind off of him and it’s the only way I can get myself tired so I can fall asleep.

Thing is, I haven’t slept more then 4 hours a night since the break up… I wake up so early and can't fall back asleep. I used to take a prescription sleep aid called Ambiem because I couldn't sleep well from other stress, the time released one. It helps you fall asleep then slowly dissolves to help you stay asleep. Only thing is, that people can come dependent on it.. That’s why I’ve been reluctant to go refill my perscripton.

A few more day of lack of sleep I think I’m going to refill the script. Lack of sleep seriously affects you physically and mentally. Over time, it gets worse and you can get sick over it. I suggest talking to a doctor and trying a short time persctiption sleep aid, like Ambien… The extended release really does help you stay asleep for 7 – 8 hours. Even just using it for maybe a week may help you get back on a regular sleeping schedule.

Oh, adding…. I’ve tried all those over the counter ones, like Tylenol PM, benadryl, everything… OMG they all give me the worst hangover. The next day it makes me feel so fuzzy I can barely function. That’s why I think prescription sleep aids for short term use are better because it wears off quick… I wake up feeling great with no hangover. Just never drink if you take those and make sure you allow yourself 7 – 8 hours sleep so it wears off before you start your day

Good luck and sweet dreams!!!

I chop my Benadryls in half and take only half - no more hangover.

Thanks for the responses.....

Since I haven't had any sleep problems in the past, the pharmacist recommended taking "Simply Sleep" by Tylenol. Thought maybe I just needed a push.

Nope. I awoke at 4am anyway. So it bought me probably another hour of sleep. It also as Shana mentioned brought me a "hangover" like effect. Oy. The lack of sleep is really starting to get to me. I know it's raising my anxiety level and not helping me think straight about what's going on in my life. Today with grey saucers under my eyes, I just have no drive to do much of anything.
