He'd rather use the money to buy a new car that doesn't routinely break down on the highway; I want to pay more off the house. We'll probably split the difference ... But problem is, we have so many friends and family that cutting down the guest list is nearly impossible. Plus, we kinda want to do something fun. So, we're thinking, screw it, let's combine wedding and Honeymoon and get married in Vegas! Only, isn't Vegas kinda tacky? Will we look back on this in years to come and shudder? Or will we be having the last laugh 'cause we got married for $500 and got a vacation and a new car and a bit off the mortgage? I just don't know. But I'm interested, anyone else actually get married in Vegas and live to tell the tale?
Woggle Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I can't stand Vegas but I do sympathize with the need not to go broke on a wedding. Are there any other states where it easy to get married? If you still want to have all those friends and family why not have it in the park and have it catered by a decent but affordable place instead of spending all that money on a bunch of fancy stuff?
Art_Critic Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 There are a lot of states with laws similar to Nevada http://www.wedalert.com/content/planning/marriage_laws.asp Just pick a state without the blood test being required and no waiting period and make sure you don't have to have residency Then just plan a nice Honeymoon to where ever and when you get there go to the courthouse and get married. LasVegas I believe is the state where you can get married on every corner instead of the courthouse. You should also call the courthouse of the place you pick to also verify the requirments to get married Good Luck
catgirl1927 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I got married the first time in Vegas, and my BF and I are planning to marry in Vegas. We are opting for a Vegas wedding followed by a two week honeymoon touring Italy, because we'd rather spend the money on a fantastic trip we'll remember forever than on a big wedding. Vegas CAN be tacky. But anything can be tacky. Not every Vegas wedding is performed by an Elvis impersonator. I suggest you check online for wedding packages with some of the nicer hotels. It's just like getting married in any hotel, except it's usually less expensive and the staff is more experienced in dealing with weddings. You will most likely be pleasantly surprised. There is no blood test required in Vegas. Just take your birth certificate and I think a driver's license (check though) to the courthouse. It's pretty quick.
laRubiaBonita Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 My *Ideal* way to get hitched would be to do it vegas.....not tell anyone, we could just say we got engaged there, Then a year to the day get married "for real" and then reveal that this is our One year anniversary party, and we would be renewing our vows in front of our friends and family this time. Course it would probably piss my mother off..... oh well!

It's like Disneyland but without the mice and mermaids. But you can have a really nice wedding there, and it can be fun.

We "eloped" to Reno (I always did want to be a cliche), got married (took less than an hour to get the license and get hitched) and didn't tell anyone for several months thereafter. We then planned a renewal a year later. My wife's mother WAS pissed but then again, everything and everyone pisses her off and we haven't had a thing to do with her for over five years. The "wedding" itself took about five minutes (we told the minister to just say the bare minimum necessary to make it legal) but it must have taken. We celebrate our 10th anniversary this December.

AGuestWho'sBeenThere Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Instead of doing Vegas, you can always look around online for a Bed and Breakfast that offers an 'elopement' or 'marriage' package. Pick a town, pick a Bed and Breakfast that offers the package, and have your wedding and honeymoon all at once. Some places do accomodate some guests, which is nice if you want to say "Sorry, immediate family only, but we'll have a dinner party for everyone when we get back..." That's what we did. My husband's family wanted a huge grand wedding they could brag about to friends and co-workers, but offered no assistance beyond constantly griping and moaning about how THEY wanted things to be. The more they griped, the less I wanted to have any wedding... until I stumbled across an article about 'running away' to get married. Yes, they were upset. No, we didn't care. My family was all for it, and for far, far less than a wedding would have cost we had a nice, private ceremony and an amazing honeymoon. Some folks absolutely must have the huge church wedding and spend thousands upon thousands to do so... to us, it made more sense to put all that money towards a down payment on a house and have our wedding be something meaningful to *us* as a couple. And that is exactly what our little marriage ceremony was. Sure, it might have been nice to have the wedding we had originally planned, but I don't regret a thing about how we got married.
