Noos Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I go to the gym regularly four times a week and cycle, walk (fast pace) on the treadmill and use the cross trainer. I do 5 hours of exercise a week. I don't eat bread, pasta, rice, white flour or fruit juice and limit fruit juice and potatoes. I want to drop 4 kilos and would like to know if resistance training will help me achieve this rather than just focussing on cardio. Or should I step it up to 6 hours each week?

Eating a few small healthy meals a day and skipping dinner (by that I mean eat at 6 pm the last time, but little so you can be hungry at 9 pm again) plus cardio exercise such as jogging and swimming will help you drop the 4 kilos in less than one month. You know you can't afford to eat "well" and you have to starve yourself a little bit if you want to lose weight. Weights lifting won't do anything if you eat fattening food. I am struggling to lose those last 4 kilos of fat too. I hate my cellulite. The gym didn't help me get rid of it. Jogging helps a lot. Only 15 min per day (effectively, not necessarily at once) makes my legs look GREAT after only a month. Jogging is the best thing if you want thin legs without cellulite, but you need to combine it with diet. Swimming is the best for losing weight and shaping yourself, but for some reason only swimming in the sea helps me. Swimming in a pool doesn't do much for me. Isn't life just s***ty? And it's so hard to keep your good looks.
Dawn82 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 resistance training will not help you lose 4 kilos off your weight faster. But it will reduce/prevent muscle loss while dieting, so its extremly important for any weight loss routine. also in the long term muscles burn energy just by being there. more muscles = more energy burned per day = more food consumed per day without gaining fat. an extra hour of cardio would burn some more calories yeah. but keep in mind that you need to burn around 7000 (or was it 7700?) calories to lose 1kg. I bearly burn an estimited 700 calories per hour of moderate cardio and I am over 200lbs... If I were you i would try to caculate your energy requirments and create a 500 calories a day deficency by both exercise and Diet which will allow you to lose those last 4 kilos safely in 8 weeks. Shahar.
Author Noos Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 Okay - If I cut out cheese altogether I can do that. Goddamn it! And RP - I enjoy exercise but I do want to have time to pursue other things as well. It's the people who do nothing and still maintain their weight and tone that annoy the hell out of me!
Pink_Tulip Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Weight lifting is an important part of losing weight. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism, the more efficiently you burn fat and lose weight, even during resting periods. This is why many men don't gain weight like women, they naturally have more muscle mass. Rather than increase your cardio, start some light weight training instead, and you will notice a difference pretty quickly. Also, weights are the one thing that has been shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Strengthening the muscles in your thighs makes them tigther, so the fat around them doesn't appear as dimpled. Don't forget to drink lots of water, good luck!
Dawn82 Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Cutting out foods completely is bad. I've lost 16kilos AND added muscle mass in the last 6 months(I would guess around 20kilos of fat loss). I still eat a junk meal once a week at least. Do your weight lifting, do your Cardio, eat properly. if its 30% fat cheese, yeah its not the best of ideas to eat that. but of course you can do so once in a while... if its 5% cottege cheese eat as much as you can get... Shahar.
