I have heard if you use exfoilating body washes or scrubs sometimes, it can help maximize your skin before tanning, be in the tanning beds, out in the sun or using those self tanners because it helps to get rid of dead skin cells. I haven't tried any exfoliating products yet. Was wondering if any one else has tried them and if so what kind? And if you could tell a difference?

Bath and body works used to have sugar scrubs, I liked them better than salt scrubs because if you have ANY cuts or abrasions those salt scrubs are pretty bad. Origins makes some really great products. I am also a fan of St Ives Apricot Scrub. It's a good deal less expensive.

Exfoliating before tanning will make a HUGE difference. You basically go in with all new smooth skin. It's really important for sunless tanning...

I'm really big on skin care. I don't know much about tanning but regardless it's good to exfoliate, but not daily. Yes you can tell the difference. You're sloughing off all of the dead skin so the new healthy skin will be the one showing.

I like both the salt and sugar scrubs. I tend to use the salt ones in the summer since they can be drying. The sugar ones I use in the winter. I buy all of my skin care products at health food stores, you can find products at yours I'm sure. If not, sounds like catgirl had some recommendations there. For my face I use Alba Hawaiian..yumm.

I'll have to check in the morning to see what brand it is, but the stuff I use after my swim class has almost a gritty sand texture that's prolly the best I've found for sloughing off dead skin and icky pool crap.

however, you're prolly going to have to buy many tubes or pots of stuff to find something that works for your particular skin. The stuff I finally found is an off-brand I found at Ross! The good news is, if you go to a place like B&BW, you can try out their products before buying.

And they are awesome about returns. If you buy something and it irritates you, they will let you take it back.

To add to what blind said, is it better to use an actual exfoilating scrub or a body wash? Also I know some are salt scrubs and some are sugar scrubs. What are the diferences there as far as how they work one being salt the other sugar? Is one for dry skin and the other for oily?

As far as taking off dead skin, there isn't much difference between loofah and scrubs. Scrubs usually have other ingredients that will moisturize while exfoliating.

Exfoliating scrubs are not cleansing and not for daily use. They're to slough off dead skin, period. You have to find out how often to use it for yourself as each person's skin is different. The thoughts are usually every other day to once a week.

Salt is drying so it's going to be recommended more for oily skin. I have dry skin but use salt scrubs in the summer. Personally, I find sugar to be more gentle than the salt scrubs or the loofa scrubs. I find them to be a bit more abrasive (in a good way) than the bottled body scrubs which typically use fruits as the exfoliator. For that reason I tend to like the bottled fruit scrubs for the face. Always use a more gentle scrub on your face than your body.
