littlepiggy1 Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I've never had a great complextion. I had bad acne as a teen and it left me with some scars. More recently, however, I've been having problems with the skin on the side of my nose and under my eyes. It tends to get red and irritated. Then it will get a bit scaly (I guess while healing). Then it flakes and gets red and irritated again. Usually during this it can get pretty ichy, too (I try to avoid scratching it, but sometimes that is difficult). It's been going on for awhile and I don't know what to do. I've been tempted to make a doctor's appointment, but it's not a super serious issue so I've been putting that off. I generally use facial cleansers and moisturizers during the day. My skin is a bit oily, so I'll wash my face 2-3 times a day and put on moisturizer afterwards. I also shave (being a guy) but notice the area of my face where I shave isn't irritated. I don't know why this one area of my face keeps having this problem. Also, I pop a vitamin E pill everyday, since I've read that vitamin E is necessary for good skin health. Any recommendations? I'm not adverse to using feminine skin care products, so recommend away.
KittenMoon Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 You may be over washing. Try cutting down to twice a day, once in the morn, once in the evening. If you don't mind dropping a few bucks, invest in a really good moisturizer. I use Prescriptives All You Need+ (spf 15) moisturizer. Kinda expensive, but makes my skin feel great. Or you could talk to the make-up counter people and see what they suggest.
magda Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Washing 2-3 times a day might be once too many. I have oily also and I've been told to wash twice a day, max. I use cetaphil to wash, which doesn't have soap in it. You might try microdermabrasion. Might as well make an appointment with the dermatogolist though, before you go around investing in expensive products that might not work for you.
Author littlepiggy1 Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 I'll try to limit the washings to two a day then. But what do I do about my skin when it starts to feel and look a bit oily? Usually that happens later in the day, which is where the 3rd washing comes in.
KittenMoon Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 If it looks oily, get blotting papers. You can rub them on your skin and they remove excess oil. I think the Body SHop carries them, you should be able to locate them in make-up sections.

Summerday Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 My boyfriend has this same problem... Doc told him he has Rosacea, and recommended Cetaphil. He has been using this product for last 4 years, and is able to control redness, and dry scaly areas. I have good skin, but use this product as well, works great. You can find it in supermarkets, usually the pharmacy area. Good luck.
suga Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 You wash your face often so it dries it out...mabey after you wash it you could use an eye cream for your eyes...always use sunblock lotion (oil free) too especially when using acne treatments they can damage your skin cause they make it more vulnerable in the sun. There are these acid peels you can get (salicylic acid) that cost $200...go to a asthetician...they are called blue peels...very drastic improvement in scars.

I did what people suggested and cut down my face washings to twice a day max. Once in the morning and once in the evening. If you over wash, or use a lot of alcohol products, or soap, or whatever, your skin can kick up oil production to compensate. SO you could have been making it MORE oily by overwashing.
