Hey All---

Well now that I'm recently single and have tons of time on my hands I figure I might as well put it to good use. I'd like to lose about 10-15 lbs and get back into my target range. I'm 5'8" and 168, I'm sure part of that is muscle but I'd like to be in the 150 ish range. I know that to lose weight you must burn more calories than you take in and avoid trans fats. What I don't know is the best way to do this. My friend said losing weight is 80% what you eat. Are there any good supplements that actually work or are they all a sham?

most of the supplements just make you drop water weight, which dehydrates you and comes right back when you stop taking them.

The best way is to not count only calories, but the type of calories, as all calories are not created equal. You want to avoid white flour and simple carbs (sucrose, processed fructose, HFCS) and eat plenty of complex carbs, whole grains, lean meats and raw/fresh fruits and veggies. I eat a lot of pasta dishes and drink a lot of fruit smoothies.

Also make sure you eat during your active period of the day. Eat a good breakfast, a good lunch, and a light dinner. If you take in calories during the day, you are more likley to burn them, while if you take them in before bed or at night when you are not doing much, they are more likley to be stored as fat. So make sure you are burning a few hundred more calories then you eat, but also make sure you are eating them at the right time of day. Starving yourself before and after working out then going home and eating a huge dinner before bed will actually be counter productive.

In terms of exercise, fat is burned evenly defined by genetics. Aka working your arms is just as likley to burn fat from your stomach as it is from yout arms. So to maximise how much fat you burn, you need to work the biggest muscles you have. Those would be your legs. So running and riding turn out to be very effective at burning fat. Just keep the intensity low and you will start conditioning your body to burn off fat. The more you condition, the more efficient it becomes and the better it even becomes in burning fat throughout the day while yo're not working out. So keep your intensity at a level that you can hold a labored conversation and you should be good to go.

I recommend weightlifting, if you don't do it already. It will help boost your metabolism and burn more calories.

Now you might not actually lose weight by weightlifting, but you can certainly lose fat and develop a more toned physique.

Well I think your friends who say 80% of losing weight is what you eat are 80% wrong.

Just eat a balanced diet! Its really not rocket science! Im sure your well aware what you should eat and what you shouldnt.

If you exercise, concentrating on cardio, you will lose wight! I say again you will lose wight!

People these days are looking for the easy option.. NEWS BREAK! There aint no easy option!

You might want to pick up "The Abs Diet". I'm partway through it and it seems to have a lot of very sensible ideas, and it's not quite as messianic as Body For Life. Advocates a lot of the same things that MattB mentions in his post.

I can't say that it's worked yet because I've just started, but it doesn't seem to be about a "diet" per se -- more about developing a healthy approach to eating. One important component of its approach is that you eat six meals a day -- a snack a couple of hours after each not-oversized main meal. Something small. The idea is to keep your body burning fuel constantly during the day, rather than depriving it for 3-5 hour stretches and letting it start to go into "starvation mode" and store fat. According to the book, this can help to increase your metabolism, and therefore help you lose fat.
