Uh huh. And how many of you guys will drive a mini-van? What do you think about guys who drive mini-vans?

;)

I have a friend who is my age and single, drives a red mini-van with spoiler. I wonder why he is still single.

I have a crossover SUV with vainity plate; as guy I refuse to drive a mini-van even when I become a soccer dad.

Why do men define themselves by the kind of car they choose?

Do you think it has anything to do with a sexual reference?

Do you think women do this as much as men?

What's the difference between the way the genders look at it?

Just asking.

Can you explain more? How do you mean "define themselves"? Most guys who are into cars buy because they like them - either the looks, the speed & power, the sound of the engine or the handling. Others buy to get from A to B reliably at reasonable cost. And finally some buy for status or appearance reasons - like it or not, people do make judgements based on your car, so you might want to own the appropriate one to get the desired reaction.

Now wondering where I can purchase a pope-mobile? :p

men like nice/fast/expensive cars because good-looking women like nice/fast/expensive cars....

That's not the only reason. Ugly but fast/powerful/good-handling cars also appeal to many men, whereas most women don't like them.

What can I say? I think cars are stupid. I think they serve a purpose nothing more, and that putting value on something that only depreciates in value is kind of wacked. House? hell yeah, status symbol. Land, property? Sure.

A car, which is most likely leased and traded out, which does nothing but suck money and does not increase your net worth, not even amongst your tangible assets? Nah.

But that's exactly why it's a status symbol. Buying a $250,000 car that depreciates 30% the moment you drive it out of the showroom says "look, I'm rolling in so much money I don't care if I drop $100k in one year on a pointless extravagance".

As for being stupid, they're only stupid if you don't enjoy them. Jewellery, fine food & wine, anything pleasureable in life is "stupid" if you only look at it in terms of how much it appreciates in value. An expensive Swiss watch or Italian suit is a status symbol, they depreciate even more than cars and are even less functional.

um, lets see....he's probably married with kids, reliable, dependable, and boring as hell....

But you can be driving in a Hyundai or Viper, the speed limit is still the same.

A Hyundai can't hit 160mph+ on the open road.

Well yeah. And I think those are pretty dumb, too. I'm not big into materialism, maybe because I did have the luxury of never worry about money when I was growing up. I don't value it that much. In my family we were taught that wealth of the mind is worth more than material wealth.

SORRRRRYYYYY! just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

the folks most obsessed with money are the ones who don't have it...

In my family we were taught that wealth of the mind begets material wealth

You must think of what others think of you to some extent...

Oh, yeah, I most certainly do. But as I said, not THAT MUCH. I think everyone is aware of their place in the social group, it is a prime directive of survival for primates.

But everyone differs as to the degree to which they allow the desire for social acceptance to effect their behavior and day to day life. I mean, I mow my lawn more for social convention than because I enjoy the way a nice, trimmed lawn looks. I could care less and I forget all the time. I only do it when kids start knocking on my door offering to mow the lawn for $10 or something.

My boyfriend has a mitsubishi revolution and he loves it to pieces - he has glammed it up like the fast and furious cars - which are not seen around australia too much - it is white with red flames......

he loves his car, and likes to drive it everywhere - i think he does it for people to look at it - but he is a car appreciator - i dont know if he does it to get chicks - the car certainly didnt attract me at first, but he has made me into a car woman and we check out nice cars all the time together now.

Did you see "Zoolander"?

There's a seen where a group of young, dumb male models stop to get gas and have a "water" fight with gasoline to the song "Jitterbug". Then they all explode in a ball of flame.

Wake me up! Before you GO-GO...

Guys who drive corvettes (unless they are classic) and have cigarette style boats are all trying to make up for inadequacies below the belt!
