the_alchemyst Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I hear this a lot, but as embarrassing as it may be to confess, I don't really understand this, erm, "concept." I know it literally means calling when drunk, but what is the underlying meaning of this? Why do people do it? Why would someone call their ex? Does it mean that they still care/think about them? I mean, why the ex? Why not call a friend and say stupid things or someone else? Why . . . the ex? I've never been drunk or even gotten close, so I have no idea what this is about. Anyone care to explain a bit?
bab Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 You can drunk dial anybody, not just an ex. My friends or sister usually get the brunt of it. It ususally starts with thinking about someone, and it just doesn't occur to you that calling them right that second (albeit 4am) might not be the best thing in the world. The ole, "Seemed like a good idea at the time..." philosophy comes into play. Why someone might call an ex. Well, they've got something to say to them (whether is be that they will always love them no matter what, or that they absolutely hate their guts and they never want to see them again), that the sober self realizes might not be the best to unveil that information. The drunk self only remembers that they want to say something to them. Alcohol helps one forget that there will be consequences for every action.
johan Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 In college I was interested in a girl I worked with. We hadn't done anything, but I kidded around with her a lot. She was playing it really cool. I went to a party at a friend's house. I was having fun and really wishing she was there. With a heavy buzz, around midnight I called her up to see if she wanted to join us. She had to get out of bed and it woke her roommate up. I couldn't really hear her very well because of the music, so it was hard to hear her and I was shouting into the phone. So the conversation didn't go as planned. Also she was pretty pissed, so we didn't talk for long at all. I ended up dating her for four years and we lived together for 2. She was the best girlfriend I've had.
blind_otter Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Being drunk, after a certain point, can automatically make any one into an ass. Therefore, all the things you could potentially say to an ex, which you would normally never say in a million years out of fear of (a) being an ass (b) exposing vulnerability or © freaking them out -- all could potentially come out. I've drunk dialed friends before. In those instances I would leave bizarre messages, like me going "AI yai yai yai YAI yai YAI!" or "Have I ever told you that you are my bestest, bestest friend that I love ever so much? Remember the time...blah blah blah" on their voicemail or whatever. Which in my book counts as a drunk dial, because you still look like an ass. A happy ass, but an ass nonetheless. This is one of many reasons why I don't drink any more.

If we weren't drunk together I could call her wherever she was and she'd be drunk too I've done the drunk dialing the ex, or even the bf... sooo embarressing!! I've woken up w/the phone laying in my hand and had no idea who I called or what I said!!
