Often, boys are slower talkers, and that is considered normal. Sounds like it's clearly not a hearing problem.

I am a bit surprised that your doctor recommended speech therapy for a boy not yet three, just because of lack of sentences. I guess I don't know the full story. How urgent does your doctor consider the speech therapy to be? Also, can you tell him/her about the practical difficulties, and ask if there is anything you can do at home?

Does your son have someone to talk to all day, or is he with a TV or silent/unspeaking caregiver? If he does not have lots of warm, human verbal stimulation for most of the day, I would focus on that in preference to almost anything else.

I have 5 kids and none of them began speaking around the same time. my 3 year old boy (4 next month) doesn't speak very well. a few months ago he couldnt put a sentence together now he will sit me down and talk for an hour (I understand most of it)

Dont worry!!!! he's fine!!! Does he spend most his time with you? if so this could be a reason he isnt speaking real well....your his mom you understand him!!! I'l bet you can converse with him fine cant you? my "baby" and I can talk for a long time and no one else knows a word he said. Also I've never talked in a baby voice or baby talk, so this is not "why" or part of the "problem" (if you want to call it that).

my 5 year old started talking "late" too and now she speaks better than ALL my kids.

I know this is long but your question gave me a little time ward through my kids learning how to talk...how cute!

Also...(sorry forgot I was gonna write this) I wouldn't worry about speech therepy just yet ( I sent my middle child) when she was 5 and it didn't help much. and if you want him to go to school (like preschool) send him...he will start talking better and more cause of his little friends.

It is normal. As young children they all grow up at diffrent speeds. I worked for a 3 year old who couldn't talk, couldn't make any sentances and hardly knew any words and pointed to what he wanted. He was going on 4 too.

i don't mean to freak you out or anything, but has your child's doctor ruled out autism? there are usually very disinct behaviors that autistic children display at a young age and not speaking is one of them. i was just wondering.

thanks so much for the advice....i think i just need more time....and i dont think he's autistic child....coz i already search for that and he didnt fall under that.....maybe it will take more time.....i leave him with her nanny...coz im a working mom but whenver im home i try to talk to him and sometimes i think he's fed up coz he will say " mom, and pointing his finger in my mouth tellin showin me to stop talking" very funny!!!

I didn't start stalking until I was 11 or 12. Don't pressure him. It'll come naturally when he's ready.

Oh... I misread your first post. Yeah I started talking before 12. Definitely. Probably around 2 or 3.

I will say that my little brother didn't start talking for a long time. He was 5 or 6 before he started really putting sentences together, but no one could understand him except the people who knew him. And even up to 10 or 12 it was still hard for me to get what he was saying a lot of times. He's ok now.

So, I'm confused Johan. Did you start talking at 2 or 3 or 11 or 12? Your posts are a little confusing.

just wondering, what language do you speak at home? Is your child exposed to other languages as well? I have 2 nephews who learnt our native tongue before english, they both were about 4 yrs old before they were able to string sentences together in either language as i think it took sometime for them to sort it out in their own minds first... Now they are older and speak both languages fluently, very clever little boys =) Some children would take longer than others to speak in sentences if this is the case..

I have a hard of hearing child....You need to go to a peidatric ENT and have his ears and hearing tested. If you got a test at a peds office it is not adaquate to catch some hearing loss. Go to an Peidatric ENT/Audiologist (most of their clinets are kids).

My thought exactly. Most children are fairly conversant by age three UNLESS they have a hearing problem. I would definitely pursue that.

My now four year old was not talking much by age three. He splits time in seperate parts of the country , between me and his father.

I had been quite concerned about his speach ability so when he arrived for his time with me I already had a doctors appointment set up for him. It turned out that while he could hear some, his ears were almost completely impacted with wax . It took months of three times daily cleanings at home for the wax to soften and come out , and his speach almost immediatly improved . He's now back with his father and when I talk on the phone with him I can hear the language slurs again and I know someone needs to clean his ears .It makes me angry, a few minutes a day is not a tremendous amount of time to spend so that your child can hear and speak properly .

Reguardles, I would have your son's hearing extensively checked again, It sounds as though you've had it done before . Also , it always helps children if you pronunciate your speach in format so that they can understand the breakdown of the word and the proper way to say it .

I think it is better safe than sorry..It is better to go to the Dr and find out it is nothing than to wait and find out you should have taken them in.
