I have an embarassing question. I need some help developing my personal style. I have worked in IT for so long (where what you wear isn't really important, and the more boring and nondescript it is the better, for credibility's sake) and lived in college towns in Texas where no one dressed up to go out, it was jeans and t-shirts everywhere. I really like edgy, interesting clothing but I'm too cautious, insecure, whatever to try it. I'm wondering what resources I can start checking out to help me with this. Or do I just need to go shopping more? Any ideas?

The reason for the sudden concern is my boyfriend and I go to trendy clubs where I always feel underdressed. I see all these awesome clothes that I want to try but I lack focus and planning to actually put together a wardrobe like that. I am literally starting from scratch.

Definitely start going shopping more. Cool shops, like cool hairdressers, can give off an intimidating air....but they're your best starting point. Start getting used to going into those places and asking for help and opinions. That's what the people in there are paid for - and provided you're friendly to them and go in when they're not too busy, the chances are that they'll thoroughly enjoy helping you create a new style for yourself.

I always get ideas from magazines and catalogues, conveniently everything is accessorised already so for those with less fashion experience, it can help you kinda slowly get a sense of it.

Because IMO accessories are just as important as the clothes. I always make sure to wear really hot shoes and nice jewlery. Then you can be wearing blah clothes and still ook put together.

This is SO true. And I love those giant beads that are in style now.

Sadly, I tend to dress a leetle bit trashy. I dunno why. My true nature coming out :lmao:

go to Nordstrom's and get a personal shopper....but it'll cost you. Then again, if you're in the nerdy IT field you're probably making decent money. :)
