my fiance and I have been living together for almost 2 years (with his mom & dad). We got engaged christmas of '04 and have been together for 5 years. We can't afford to get our own place yet and I have asked him about going ahead and getting married. He says that he won't marry me yet because we don't have our own place. His idea is that a couple must enter a marriage on thier own. I DO agree with him, but to a certain extent. I don't think that he should be able to get all the benefits of a marriage from me without giving me what I want in return (his last name). Am I wrong for wanting to get married NOW??

This is a matter of personal ideals. What exactly are you looking for that is making you want to get married now? Clearly you do not object to unmarried people living together - so your issue is not a religious one. Had he not proposed a year into your living together, would you still be having this issue?

Personally I think you are both a bit young/inexperienced to be making a lifelong committment to eachother. If I understand correctly neither one of you has lived on your own, had the responsibility of maintaining a home, etc. These are pressures that cause issues with far more experienced couples - and you want to get married while still living with his parents?

I know you don't want to hear this - but I would have to agree with him. Get your feet under yourselves so your marriage is based on a solid foundation - then make the lifelong committment.
