I'm a junior in highschool and am on the boys swim team. I really like a girl on the girls team, however I only see her sometimes at practice or at meets(which are over). She is usually around a group of her friends so it would be real awkward to just walk up and try to start a conversation or try to get her number. However, she knows who I am so were not complete strangers. I was wondering if theres any way to break the ice between us without making me look like a complete idiot.

hey dude, breaking the ice is one of the hardest things for me to do myself. Try to talk to her when she is alone, there will be an opportunity. I've found that just being weird and funny works the best on any type of girl except one's that are uptight, they're not worth the trouble anyway. If you can make a girl laugh you're buying a ticket into her heart. i have the most trouble when i psyche myself up too much. If i keep joggin my mind on ways to do it, I'm screwed. I'm actually having a similar problem right now myself with this girl I like. Act relatively carefree and give her little hints that you're compassionate. This is a very appealing combination to almost any girl. Remember, most girls are more insecure than us, they just do an excellent job of hiding it. Tell her funny stories about yourself instead of starting by asking questions. After you make her laugh, get serious;the number one goal is to make her feel comfortable and relaxed around you. Humor is the best way. If you're shy then try getting her number or talk to her on instant messaging. Take your time, don't try to do everything at once. You may get to know her more and not even like her. Who knows? Ultimately, you've got nothing to lose, go for it. Hope this helps.

Say 'Hi' with a nice smile whenever you have a chance. No risks taken.

Find Something Interesting About Her and complement her on it. I'll take it that you'll be complementing the right thing ;) Go for the hair or some of her clothing that looks unique and complement her on it.
