But do you all believe in God? Do you believe in an after-life in spiritual form. None of that can be scientifically explained either, yet so many believe.

god and religion and psychics all do the same thing. they try to explain the unexplainalbe and rationalize what is irrational. that is why they have existed for so long and will continue forever. does not mean that any are correct or accurate or even exist.

humans must fill in the holes of their knowledge to keep sane.

Thing is, you may be right. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. (Hamlet, 1v5) But if so-called psychics like this Sylvia person continue to avoid or dismiss attempts at proving her abilities, what does that tell you?

It doesn't tell me anything. She believe her talents are a true gift from God and sees no reason to be put under the microscope of the scientific community. No matter how much she did get right, they would be looking for a way to discredit her.

That's exactly my point. If she can prove herself using their research parameters, then they won't be able to discredit her. So if/when she's proven right, further attempt to discredit her will only make her case stronger and the researcher's case weaker.

If she's truly gifted, then she should be proud to trumpet it to the world. I would. Wouldn't you?

Just seems a little fishy to me, like the driver refusing a breathalyzer test.

eeesh, that still sounds so risky! you have a lot more balls then i do! good for you for knowing your body so well, i think that's kinda cool, even though i wouldn't risk it myself.

but...i'm paranoid about that stuff, so i don't leave anything to chance.

No slub, you're missing the point. There's a great skepticism built around the paranormal. Society is terrified of the unknown and unexplainable. Even if she got 80% of this "test" right, they would discredit her as a fraud for missing the other 20%. And Sylvia does trumpet here talent to the world. She makes the money she does because she is credible. If she wasn't, she wouldn't be where she is right now.

She is making the money because people are desperate enough to give it to her. Desperate people sometimes do desperate things... and most of the time they are unwise.

Well, you may be right about the 80/20 test, but I guess we'll never know because she refuses to put herself and her claims under scrutiny.

Regardless, I'm a born sceptic by nature. But at the same time, I'd be very excited to find one of these psychics if they were put to the test and their powers were proven. It would change everything about the way we perceive the world!

And that would be so very cool.

I think that would be totally cool also, and I would submit to one of these "tests" but I fear the insane intrusion on my relatively quiet life, and the possible ostracism from society. Sort of like what happened to Christ. I'm really not into being crucified. That's gotta hurt cuz I saw the movie.

I haven't read this whole thread but I have a couple of things to say.......

1) Sylvia Brown is awesome, she's helped the police find bodies/killers, ect. If she's not "legit" how can one explain this??

2) I personally believe but hadn't ever experienced any spirits, ect. I was on a road trip going through colorado when my road trip buddy started channeling a murdered friend of mine, telling me things that she could NOT have known, I'd never so much as even spoken his name, let alone all the details plus experiences I experienced after his death.

Needless to say I've had first hand experience with the paranormal....but in all honesty no one can really know if someone is real or faking, we all have our opinions and i think in it's own time each of our beliefs will be built/tested!

really? i think it would be ruined and made corrupt like everything else of any intrigue or value.

everyone would be a psychic, people would be bringing lawsuits against other people by "poving" through a psychic that that person is planning on causing harm, there would be a disney psychic movie, psychic lunchboxes...

whether you believe in it or or, it's usually the unknown quality of it that is so appealing, even just to discuss it. it wouldn't have that mystery bubble around it anymore, and people love that mystery bubble.
