One of my friends, Ruth, is in love with a guy called Mike. She believes that nobody knows anything about her feelings for him, but it is plain for everyone to see that she is mad about him - she flings herself at him at parties, she makes a beeline for him whenever she sees him and talks about him non-stop to anybody. Her MSN picture is even a photo of them together at some party.

Mike on the other hand is avoiding her. He is in love with someone else, and through the grapevine I have heard how uncomfortable Ruth's advances make him feel. Mike is one of the nicest guys that you can meet though, and he wouldn't ever want to hurt her feelings by knocking her back.

Ruth on the other hand, has taken these happy vibes as a come-on, and she has been discussing to the rest of us how she wants to tell that 'certain someone' how much she loves him and wants to be his girlfriend.

Her MSN name is something like 'should i tell him, shouldnt i?' and im desperate that she doesn't. Ruth would be devastated if he told her he only liked her as a friend.

As her friend, what can i do? She's heading for a fall rapidly and I want to stop it from happening.

Hmm...its horrid when that happens!

If she can be given a 'hint' without her loosing face or confidence, then so much the better. I don't know how exactly, just whatever seems kindest. For instance, if she doesn't think you know about her infatuation, you could play the innocent and bring up in conversation that he's interested in someone (and that it isn't her). You could tell her directly though which might allow her to fact it a bit more head on and might get the message across. Whatever you do, try to emphasise that she is very attractive and its just a mike specific rejection - its so bad for the ego this kind of thing!

Also, there might be nothing you can say or do which would make a difference at this stage. Sometimes when you've got it bad, its only the humilation of an all-out rejection that gets it through to you that he doesn't feel the same.

It sounds like you're a very good friend to her. Good luck
