What are you your opinions on buying dvd players for the car? My daughter got a dvd player for the car and i totally think it was money spent well.. At first i thought it would be a waste of money but all in all sure has been a great babysitter while driving..My child is very demanding, intelligent child and needs to her mind stimulated and so glad we made this purchase for Christmas.. It wasn't very expensive at all.. We got it the day after Thanksgiving sales and she used it for 2 wks and it wouldn't read the disk anymore so we had a 3 month warranty and took it back, they didn't what we originally purchased so we got another one that we payed the difference for and ended paying $34 .04 extra .. So only about 100.00 in it so think it was worth it and this has a bigger screen that what she had so can't beat that for that amount of money!! Does anyone have these and what are your views on it..

whatever happened to books?

i think dvd players in cars are okay as long the children watching tv in the car aren't watching tv all the time at home as well.

my sister has one too (she has 3 kids, 6 and under) and she might go crazy or get in an accident if they weren't settled in the car. but if they do watch something in the car, my sister won't put the tv on when she gets home. my nieces are all intelligent children, and they certainly didn't get that way by staring at a screen all day long.

some people use tv as a baby-sitter for their kids just so they don't have to hear/bother with them.

i guess it's all about finding a balance. as long as children have other things to stimulate their minds with, i don't think a dvd player in the car is the devil.

We have a dvd player in our vehicle for our kids when we go on trips/vacations, but even then the dvd watching is limited. Most of the time our kids read books, or our daughter will bring coloring books and crayons etc to keep her occupied.

Our kids tv watching, computer use and game playing is limited as well. My wife and I decided along time ago that none of those things will bu used as a baby sitter for our kids. There's nothing wrong with playing video games, tv watching/movies, or computer use but it shouldn't be an all the time thing. Most of the time we spend quailty time together as a family. On friday night we have a family night where we all decide on a movie to watch together etc. Too much tv is never good for a child. I think thats where alot of problems come into play with some kids. Some parents pawn tv/video games off as a means not to have to deal with or interact with their kids.

She reads as well and always takes books and drawing paper as well.. I only use it for the car nothing else .. I just think it helps when you have to run errands and they are cranky .. My daughter loves to read and write always doing things having to do with school. No i don't use the tv as a babysitter ,she does other things besides watching tv,such as computer things and use the laptops to play educational games, use her leappad with writing as well!! So no she doesn't watch alot of tv..

picture books...?

yeah, my mom was like that too, still is actually. but even kids that don't get carsick from reading watch way too much tv and ignore books altogether.

there are other things too, i'm sure...but i don't know many kids who actually enjoy getting frustrated by a rubik's cube.

there's gotta be something else...even a headset with music, or an audio book might be good.

you were asking for opinions on a dvd player in a car..i wasn't personally criticizing your situation. :)

i think it's good for some, and not for others. in your case, it seems to be a good thing. (especially for you...who doesn't need some peace and quiet while driving?!)

OMG... that was one of my favourite things to do in the car during road trips! :D Still have' em too. :)

I could sit there for hours and mess with that thing... although the Rubik's Revenge would frustrate me.

Yep, DVD players can double as CD players. I use my home DVD player for CDs as well. One less component to have. :)

When you are going on longer road trips with little kids, DVD players are perfect. Keeps them quiet, happy and stops them from fighting with eachother...But if there's just one kid, a movie keeps them busy and happy

We got one for our trip over Thanksgiving, it has two screens and headsets. It was a lifesaver during the 8 hour drive. I limited the amount they could watch it though and I borrowed movies from people at work so there was a variety.

The other time I made them nap (the younger one) and color and play games. The DVD kept them from fighting alot though.

Don't they make nifty educational DVDs, though, like 'the life of the dolphin' or some such thing? So it's not as if they'd be only entertainment.

I think it's a bad idea, but I'm funny that way. While the education aspect of such a device is a compelling thought, a lot of kids would just be watching movies to watch movies.

before y'all start ranting, I understand the need for Barney videos and The Wizard of Oz to keep kids out of your hair, but I don't particularly care for the idea of using television/VCRs as a babysitter every dang time. Especially in a vehicle. Books and games and toys are excellent mind stimulators, as are conversation and music. Some of the best times I've had baby-sitting my sister's boys was singing at the top of my lungs with a 4yoa and 5yoa on the drive down to their grandma's house. The other sister's kids were good about trying to pull my leg with stories that got more and more embellished along the way. It's no crime to encourage use of interpersonal exercises at that age, and a car is a great place because you've got a captive audience.

Idunno ... I think people are getting to fixated with visual stimulation, and my older sister is on my mind as I write this. During the three-hour drive along I-20 from my house to hers on New Year's Eve, she let slip that she was watching "Bad News Bears" on her portable DVD player. Excuse me? And she was kvetching about the 8 state troopers and bad traffic on I-20? My brain is coming up with scenerios of a generation of rugrats doing this same thing because they don't know how to use their minds to occupy themselves on roadtrips or during forced periods of quiet time. Scary thought.

end of squawk ...

I think less TV at home, and more play, stimulation time is good. Books, drawing, playing board games, building a fort or baking cookies, anything! Yet, the TV can help at certain times of the day...Before dinner, or when the kids first come home from school. They need to unwind and let their minds be mush too.

In the car, on longer road trips, DVD's can just help with the stress level and ofcourse if it's a short trip there isn't any real need for a DVD to be seen. Singing, putting music on, playing eye spy with the kids etc., that's a good one too.
