In the olden days, we used to talk on the phone when we couldn't see each other.  Is this a compromise?

It not you it's them. Any woman that just wants to chat and nothing else is what we call a time waster. They are using you to get attention until they meet someone. It's very possible they have a few men on the hook to chat with. There are better ways to meet someone and date.
