justwhoiam Posted March 16 Posted March 16 How many of you in LDRs are sad to see Skype go? 21 years. It's not what it used to be anymore, but still. I haven't used it that long but for a very long time indeed. It's gonna change things for me and, quite likely, for many others.
Alpacalia Posted March 17 Posted March 17 I've never been in an LDR but I recall when Skype was popular. I think it's been replaced by other apps like Whatsapp.
ExpatInItaly Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Not in LDR and haven't ever been, but I used Skype back in the day to talk to friends and family abroad. To be honest, it's been years since I've used it. I almost always use What's App video call or Zoom instead now.

Also, Whatsapp doesn't have a computer version, it only has a kind of mirroring, so you can just connect the app on your phone to the computer so that you can see it on the screen. Furthermore, with whatsapp you can only call mobile phones, with Skype you could call any number all over the world spending mere cents. And if you send pictures through Whatsapp, the app will compress them heavily. I could go on... 1

WhatsApp does have a desktop version - not sure if I can provide the link, but it's on their website and it's called WhatsApp Desktop. The other person also doesn't need a mobile phone (they can use their computer as well), but they do need at least one mobile phone number to verify their registration initially. That being said, I do feel sad that Skype is going away. I wish they'd allowed use of the legacy app and just discontinued updates. I have fond memories of using it with H ages ago as well... 1
Foxhall Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Long distance is better than nothing perhaps- it gives a glimmer of hope to hold onto, I still hold out she will marry me and that the continuance of long range contact will eventually lead to us meeting and living happily ever after.
Lotsgoingon Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Zoom has desktop version as does Meta Messenger. I video-chat to people on Messenger all the time. Dude, I guarantee you in that six months, you will have found an app that works for you and your grief over losing skype will have vanished.
