I really wouldn’t suggest Holocaust jokes as an opening conversational gambit to the OP.

In general, humor is always a hit and miss thing.

Agreed. 

Humouor is very subjective, OP. Dark humour in particular is not always appreciated. A big element of being a funny person (in my experience) is the ability to read the room, so to speak. You can get a sense if your brand of humour will land well, or be considered crass and offensive. Until you know the person in front of you a bit better, lean far away from dark humour.
