I'm curious about how the commute would be managed, especially on weekends, but please don't respond unless you want to and feel it's relevant to helping OP put her situation in perspective. That was 5 hours by car. My ex and I drove half way and met in the middle. We also knew a few people traveling that route so she could get a ride with colleagues or friends. We did that for 2 years, then her father met a lady in the city where I am and he moved close. Many Fridays I left right after work and did that 2.5 hr drive, grabbed her, drove back 2.5 hours and we were home by 10 pm. My boyfriend has a daughter living 3 hours away. He does the same as I did 20 years ago. He drives the whole 3 hours to pick her up or sometimes the mom will drive her halfway. Sometimes when he's caught up at work I offer myself to go pick her up. When we're parents we do what we got to do. ALL this is temporary. The kids eventually grow up. In OP's situation the child will be at 1h30 min drive. That is more than manageable, it's just a matter of being organized and optimizing their time. Distance is relative. Here in Canada everything is far and the cities are far apart, so we're used to driving long distance. Example in Europe where you can visit 3 countries in 1 day, distance has a different meaning.
