He contacted me 5 days after briefly our affair was 8 years and had many feelings but I know his kids and family come first

It sounds like it probably is, but of course none of us can read his mind any better than you can. Why don't you ask him what his intentions are.

BTW, you should have posted this under Other Man/Other Woman, as Infidelity is typically for those who suspect or have found out a partner is cheating on them.
