Do these guys that call themselves players have to have money or looks or both? I know two guys that are definitely players. One is not that great looking but is very successful and has a lot of money. The other guy is tall and good looking but is totally broke. They are both early to mid forties and never been married.

A real player doesnt need of money and looks, it helps though. A Player is the one that knows how to work your brain so he can get into your pants

Speaking as a player in recovery (it's like alcoholism; you're never really cured, you just learn to control it) Enygmatic is pretty much right on the money. But there's an aspect of the player culture that is often missed.

Some people become acquisitors to fill the emptiness in their lives by buying stuff they really don't want or need. Others turn to drink or drugs. Yet others become problem gamblers.

But regardless of the specifics, they are all trying to either fill holes in their existence by obliterating their feelings, or distracting themselves so as not to have to face their own internal dæmons.

Players do it by luring young women (or sometimes not-so-young women) into their sphere of influence.

But there's one glaring difference between a player and, for instance, a perpetual gambler:

What players are looking for can actually be found in the arms of someone else, whereas a gambler or alcoholic or whatever will never find succor through their addictions.

It's a painful irony that players must live with, because if they only could let their guard down and communicate on a deep and meaningful level with one of their partners, they may find that their urge to continue the cycle vanishes in the warm light of love.

At least, that's been my experience. But maybe I'm wrong.

all "players" of both sexes must have something to offer. You won't see too many ugly and unemployed men who weight 350lbs being called a player.

I'm sorry, but I don't think a player is capable of falling in love. They are only looking for their next conquest. They cannot stay with just one person.

if the player only wants to play unattractive females then money and looks are not necessary.

Yes, I agree, and this was my point. That's why I wrote:
