A year ago I was diagnosed with HPV, the kind that causes cervical cancer. After 6 months (June) my tests began to come back clear of it, I've had two that have come back clear.

I just began dating someone about two months ago....even though I don't have it anymore, should I tell him that I had once had it?

Lying about important health matters destroys trust between you.

Ummmm... yeah.... you should. HPV remains in the body forever. You can remove the warts but the virus is still always there and it can flare up again when your immune system is suppressed.

That is so not true..post your resources please.. it isn't herpes .. read up on the link that criag posted and look for a link that JS17 posted.. it is a very helpful link

I think Kitteney meant HSV (herpes simplex virus). That does stay in the body, even if there are no outward manifestations of it.

You could be right.. She might have meant herpes but she did mention warts.. not sores or lesions

No need for it IMO. Just a lot of worry and no substance. Getting your yearly pap smears is really all you can do at this point.

There is some debate in the medical community (and apparently here on LS) as to whether HPV can be cleared from the body.

For those who believe that it can, most (70-90% according to some passages from the CDC and Planned Parenthood) will clear up in 2 years. the rest of the cases will take longer. After 5 years, some 10% continue to be infected. During which time the virus can be spread. This is from studies conducted several years ago.

Since this is such a common disease that remaining 10% leaves a lot of people with uncertain status and the potential to spread the virus to others.

Newer thinking is going back to the older thinking that the virus can lay dormant until the immune system is taxed to cause a new outbreak.

The point is, no one knows for certain. If you were to check out all of the web sites and recent medical journals addressing HPV you will find half say the virus clears up, others say it doesn't.

So girls, get your annual pap. And boys, wrap that rascal.
