A girlfriend can be a companion. A platonic friend can be a companion. An acquaintance can be a companion. A wife can be a companion. A nice dog can be a companion...I'm sure he doesn't mean you're a dog. A companion is basically a person (or animal) who is close in proximity to a person...who that person can have fun with, go places with, feel comfortable with, be himself with, etc. I think he meant this in a positive way. As far as your question about what a companion does, well since he has told you you are his companion, then a safe bet is that a companion does whatever you have been doing. You need to bring these questions up to him. He is the only human on the planet who can tell you exactly what he meant by this.
