MarcoInaros Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 My wardrobe needs an overhaul. I am 25, athletic/average build. I was wondering where guys my age usually shop for clothes. I want to look good for the ladies...but not so good that I look like a flaming you know what. And do you know of any mens fashion websites that can help me out? Thanks a bunch guys!
Enygmatic Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Good style is defined with two words: Armani and Diesel. Good luck
phyrespryte Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Well um that's really personal taste thing. I have a thing for guys that wear loose fit jeans and white button down shirts. Oh! And with flip flops! Drives me crazy. But that probably won't help you... What exactly are you looking for? Casual, work, something for going out? Are you trying to look your age? I know that sounds dumb, but most guys where I live do the whole abercrombie look. I think that has that immature frat boy vibe. But if you're still in school it works. Anyways in regards to the whole looking too flamboyant... - avoid wearing too many loud colors or patterns. if you do want something bold use it sparingly. - don't over match. it's like decorating your house. you don't want really want plaid curtains to match your plaid couch and your plaid lampshades. The key is to coordinate. - buy clothes that fit properly. don't get things that are too tight. sure it might show off your muscles, but you'll also look a little sleazy. And if you get clothes that are too baggy you'll look sloppy. Also you should look at magazines like GQ or Details (I think that's not a straight magazine but it has good fashion info for men in general). They have lots of fashion advice and tips on what's in style. Also stuff on how to pull off the look without looking like an idiot.
Author MarcoInaros Posted December 3, 2005 Author Posted December 3, 2005 Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

He he he, I tried to check out your profile to see where you are from; fitting in (a little) is key and if you live in an urban area you probably could be more "advant gaurd" then in say the flannel parts of America. You also didn't mention what you currently wear which could have been a good style but just in need of change. ANYWAY, the good thing is that you've accomplished 80% of the male woredrobe by just being physically fit. I'm gathering frmo your comments that you are looking for a sharper look to really set yourself apart or up your game a little. I used to love Kenneth Cole stuff for a sharp look but they have gone a little too far to the left for my tastes these days but you might find something to your liking. I would try a less is more approach and get a few nice things instead of a lot of junk from H&M or something. However accessories like shoes and "casual" things like jeans should be at lower cost. (when I say lower cost I mean don't need to get $400 Prada shoes or $600 jeans). Typical NYC "style": Army surplus jacket, thrift-store gray cardigan, Marc Jacobs jeans, Jackpot Records T-shirt, Converse shoes. Hmm, hard to visualize. Check out this high end website for ideas you can find in department stores, if over the top, I could mention casual stuff too (but that's probably something you know already). Basically I just go to stores/outlets and just find things at random, occationally I get something high-end like shoes or coats but thats just because I like to do that.. .it's for me. I like the dress up and dress down look at the same time, but where I live now it's not really appropiate. http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/list_products.php?rangeid=746&prodrange=Burberry%20Mens%20Clothing
JS17 Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Typical NYC "style": Army surplus jacket, thrift-store gray cardigan, Marc Jacobs jeans, Jackpot Records T-shirt, Converse shoes. Hmm, hard to visualize. Minus the grey cardigan, I dated a guy who wore that exact outfit every day. The t-shirts rotated bands but same basic idea. I was laughing to myself when I read your post NYCmitch25. lostjeff - you have to find your own style and then clean it up. Clothes are an expression of who you are. Personally, I wear a lot of Marc Jacobs, it's cute and fun and cool, downtown and uptown at the same time. Sweet but not overly feminine and low style maintenance. That describes me too I have found myself dating guys that wear Ben Sherman, pretty much the Marc J equivalent for men. You can wear tshirts and jeans and look stylish just as you can wear Kenneth Cole as NYCmitch suggested and look stylish. It's about how you do it and cleaning yourself up. When you try to dress like someone that you're not it shows, you let off an aire of uncomfortability in your own skin.
NYCmitch25 Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 my hot List: Clothing from cbgb jcrew Armani Exchange (not armani) Aldo Bannana Republic Kenneth Cole Ambercrombie (eh) cool t-shirts (fitting well) unique t-shirts urban outfitters Expensive designer labels sometimes H&M sometimes GAP International stuff The new Black -> black (black shoes, belts, sweaters, etc.) Tight fitting is in and you could prob pull it off. dressing up and casual at the same time works well Boutique stores My not so hot list: H&M GAP Old Navy novelty t-shirts backpacks brand whoring ( like those big Tommy H logo sweaters) chunky shoes bland department store looks the type of normal looking jeans that dad would wear Glittery Shiny stuff oversized clothing colors that don't match your skin tone etc. the trying too hard look "acting" you look good (to the point of arrogance) deparment store look (It screams you have no soul) hiphop look looks that dont make you feel confident never cool but I like black socks and sandels sometimes! sneakers when you aren't exercising pervert t-shirts department store t-shirts

LOL I'm glad a serious post on my part ilicits laughter from the opposite sex, I find it a real ego booster.. LOL Ayway *Good ideas*, and I'm glad a gal repsonded to him (but I'm sure a gay man would have been just as good) LOL. I guess when I said typical NYC style, I didn't mean that wsa what I wear, I'm just meant that it's a typical style in the US where Germany is similar and Japan is very femine and different. I'm actually in need of an upgrade myself as I've let myself go voer the past couple of years... I could use some advice too I guess!
JS17 Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 I was just laughing as a fellow NYC-er having dated someone who wore the exact NYC uniform that you described. I guess it was more at myself and the fact that I never thought of myself as going after a "uniform" kind of guy. One thing that I need to note...Fitted is in, Tight makes you look like a greased up club kid, however, to each his own and if you are a greased up club kid then all the power to ya. Like I said, I'm a big Ben Sherman fan if you want designer that isn't "designer", but that's just my taste. As for sneakers when you're not exercising, well me and my Chuck Ts say to you. jk
JayKay Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 I like when my BF wears Banana Republic stuff.....and Woolrich is good for when you need outdoors-y, hiking, hunting types of gear. I think GAP is OK for jeans. Kenneth Cole has some sharp stuff, although I think it also depends on where you live. Every region kind of has its own look. One of my friends moved from New York to Florida and ended up giving all his old clothes away and buying new ones. He said the styles and colors in FLA were completely different from NYC. I think Men's Health magazine and FHM might have some good ideas for you (those are two magazines my BF reads sometimes) although some of their ideas are a little out there.... but you're not supposed to copy a model's look exactly anyway. You're supposed to tone it down for day to day wear and adapt it to your own taste.
quankanne Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 definitely NOT baggy clothes ~ makes you look like you could take a dump in those huge pants for a week straight and no one would be the wiser. My mother used to call them "caca pants" for that reason  thoughts from and older, (ahem) married chick? a classic casual look is sooooo attractive on a man who is in relatively good physical condition. Fitted Levi's, tee-shirt or button-down Oxford slightly larger than you wear is also nice. Good shoes – not too ratty or trendy, but something a woman knows you feel comfortable wearing. Dress clothes? Depends on what styles look good on you. Some guys can carry the double-breasted suit look, others are fantastic in a Nehru jacket. your best bet is to find a trusted female friend (or your even your mom/older sister) who has a good sense of style, a good eye and who understands that trendy is just that ... trendy. You don't have to spend all your money to look good, but know what you can wear well and go from there. now make this old married lady happy and invest in some 501's :D
jayteresa Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Right! You should wear what makes you feel good! What makes you feel hot! Dont listern to NYC, H&M have some good stuff. I like to buy nice clothes and Im not sure what it is like in the US, but in the UK H&M has some decent gear and a bit retro sexy, which is all good! I agree with the no baggy thing, wear stuff that compliments your build. At the end of the day as long as you feel good in your wear, then generally its all good with the ladies!

H&M is lowend, thats all, good stuff though. FYI, they are going to have a new inventory EVERY month to stay on top of fashion. I'm thinking it's because in a month your clothes wear out and you need to go back for more.. LOL.
