newbby Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 that covers the safety issue, but the psychological issue, what does it teach to children, that it is ok to own a weapon that is made solely for killing, or that it is such a terrifying world that you need a gun for self protection? i guess if its for hunting only, it is no worse than buying ready slaughtered meat. what about hunting the old fashioned way?
Art_Critic Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Until a few years ago I lived for 15 years in a city called Kennesaw , Ga.. They have a gun law there where every houshould MUST own a weapon. http://www.mcsm.org/kennesaw.html The crime rate is 25 % lower than the national average per 100,000 people.. Guns do lower crime rates. http://www.kennesaw-ga.gov/civicalerts.asp

I also don't buy it being the more educated that own guns. I know a lot of people that went to/go to Ivy League schools and not a single one owns a gun.
reddog63 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I wouldnt marry a girl who would not allow guns in house................of course I would agree to keep them in gun safe...........

I also don't buy it being the more educated that own guns. I know a lot of people that went to/go to Ivy League schools and not a single one owns a gun. They may be legally registered.. but let me tell you.. that is one safe city to live in.. If you are a burglar you stay away from Kennesaw.. Why break into a house when you know you will get shot ?? I know my next neighbor had a gun ROOM .. with about 100 weapons.. and he was normal..

Wonder where that gun came from.....I have not seen an update as of yet. I am anti gun in general. But, I also need one here for defense against feral packs of dogs and for emergency euthanasia for equines. (I am qualified and trained to do this). I currently do not have a gun, my husband sold his as it was not of value to us to use for EE. a4a
lilmoma1973 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I own several guns which was a new thing to my now wife when we first started dating. Her family never owned a gun and she was very stand offish about the idea of being around them. After being around them and taught how to safely handle, use and secure them she went from not comfortable around them to asking for one of her own this last Christmas which she got. As it turns out she is pretty damn good shot to. Guns are not dangerous and they do not kill or harm people. It is the people that do not take the time to properly learn how to handle them, shoot them and store them properly that cause harm. Kids are always a concern around guns because until they are old enough to be taught to understand them, their curiosity and familarising them with toys can be a concern. But guns can be secured and stored in your house so that kids do not and will not have access to them. We have a gun safe at our house and there is no way for them to be accessed with out the combination. The combination isn't written down any where so that it can't be found and there is no key. There are many dangerous elements to a house for kids like: outlets, kithchen knives, the draw strings on windowblinds, medications, etc, etc....BUT as a responsible parent you know to make these items less dangerous by taking percautions. It is no different with guns. With a responsible approach they are not an issue. To not date a person on the account of them owning guns is selling them and yourself very short and you very well could pass up a great thing all beause of your misinformation and lack of experience around guns. Totally agree with Tudor its the people you have to watch out for but in my opinion i would be with someone that had guns but they have to be locked up and on safety locks and out of sight and out of mind .. I don't particularly like guns .. I'm scared of them and wouldn't know what to do if i had to use one!! Making sure that they weren't no where to be found .. my h hides his and it has a safety lock on it as well as the case is locked and don't even know where it is !!
Art_Critic Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 That could be argued easily See that is the thing.. it isn't a matter to be argued.. it is reality.. This is a real town with real guns and real statistics.
DacaInaru Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 although i'm not one to condone having weapons in your home.. I also think that there is nothing with a man who hunts and has a weapons collection as long as its safely behind lock and key to prevent any future children from fooling around with them... now if your worried about some guy shooting you up if things don't work out.. all I can say to that is.. any nut can obtain a gun or other weapon and shot you.. lets face it.. just because a man doesn't have a gun in his home doesn't mean he can't get one.. so.. it really doesn't matter.. if your uncomfortable with it.. then don't marry em however I think that would be foolish if you love him and he loves you.. what's the big deal?
JS17 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Where I come from we had 1 burglary in the town the entire time I was growing up there. People generally do not own guns there. In some of the neighborhoods over run with gangs in the city/boroughs, plenty of the guns aren't registered so studies show no guns right. Unsafe place to live. Trust me, there are plenty of guns.
a4a Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 See that is the thing.. it isn't a matter to be argued.. it is reality.. This is a real town with real guns and real statistics. You are correct...... the stats are there... however if you applied this idea to lets say the city of Baltimore, that when I lived there had a high murder rate.... 278ish in 2004....higher in previous years, handed everyone a gun to keep the city safe the coroner would be a very very very busy man/woman. Now if you look at other stats this GA town is not normal, just as you can look at Baltimore as not the norm......... education levels, economy, drugs, and other factors are involved in the increase of crime with guns. http://pearlyabraham.tripod.com/htmls/myth-guns2.html a4a
bab Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 There were guns all over my house growing up. I think most of them were unloaded, but I have no idea. I never touched them. We weren't even allowed to play with toy guns. I distinctly remember a friend coming over with a toy gun, I was running around with it and pointed it at my mom. I got quite the spanking for that one. We DO NOT point guns at people. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Needless to say, I never pointed a gun or even a toy gun at anyone again. Water guns were OK as long as you were in the lake at the time. We were also only allowed to have the ones that didn't resemble real guns at all.
TUDOR Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 For those of you that feel guns are such a bad thing, how many of you have ever even been around one, touched one, fired one?
a4a Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 For those of you that feel guns are such a bad thing, how many of you have ever even been around one, touched one, fired one? I have, as stated in a previous post. I am not anti gun..... I just do not see the need for semi automatic, automatic weapons, or really handguns unless being used by the police or military. I guess I am semi-gun control I have an actual need for a gun as stated in a previous post. I live in a state where it says "guns not allowed" on the doors of business establishments. I hear auto or semi auto shots in the woods....... I did not know that deer could be so dangerous that these are needed to kill them After seeing the things that happened during the Katrina clean up and how people really react during stressful times I do worry about guns a tad more. (I was there, not just seen on news reports). I myself carried a 8 inch knife on my side... not just for protection but also for utility purposes. At times I wish I had a gun.. I was lucky to have the police and military presence there in 2 instances, with their guns. a4a
JS17 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 For those of you that feel guns are such a bad thing, how many of you have ever even been around one, touched one, fired one? Been around rifles. Never fired it, don't feel it's necessary since I'll never use one. For those of you that feel that guns are fine things to have in your home, how many of you have been held up at gun point, know someone who has, or know someone who was shot?
Art_Critic Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 For those of you that feel that guns are fine things to have in your home, how many of you have been held up at gun point, know someone who has, or know someone who was shot? My ex wife who owned a c-store gas station had been held up at gunpoint 2 times.. it all stopped when she armed herself and put notices on the premises that there was a gun behind the counter.. I have never been robbed at gunpoint but I have had to live and deal with someone who has been while i was married to her.. It takes a gun to equalize the gun.. She no longer was robbed ..
TUDOR Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Been around rifles. Never fired it, don't feel it's necessary since I'll never use one. For those of you that feel that guns are fine things to have in your home, how many of you have been held up at gun point, know someone who has, or know someone who was shot? Yes I have in fact had a gun held to my face. When I was 21 and worked as batender I was closing down the restaurant with the manger. We were counting down the money in the office and doing our closing stuff for the night. Two men broke in the back door and found their way to the office we we were. One held a gun to our face while the other collected the money that was out and what was in the safe that we had open preparing to make our nightly deposit. It was the single most scary moment in my life and something I hope I never have to go through again or any one for that matter. We called the cops immediately but by they then were long gone and never caught. There will always be those that use guns for crimes or violence. There will also always be crimes of passions where a gun is involved, there will always be accidents with guns, there will always be suicides with guns, there will always be something were a gun is used in a manner that we all fear. But the guns are not the problem...the people are the problem. If we take away the right of the people that do own guns be it for sport, protection, work or even hobby on account of the bad apples then we open the door to too much government control. Once you open that door it does not stop at guns and soon the government will have control over many of the rights and freedoms that makes this country so great to live in. Gun laws have been improved over the years but yes there is still much work to be done in this arena. Guns are not for everyone but for those that do wish to own them take upon themselves the responsibility to be educated on not only the gun, but also gun safety. I encourage gun ownership but I also discourage the stupidity of those that do not take the time to learn the safety of how to own one which should be manditory.
JS17 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Research has shown that a gun kept in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household, or friend, than an intruder. Research has shown that keeping a gun in the home carries a murder risk 2.7 times greater than not keeping one. Residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience a suicide than residents of homes without guns. (not quite sure how to properly cite but I found these stats on the net) Owning a gun is a personal decision and I know it's not right for me. I realize that I'm very liberal and not everyone will agree with me and I respect everyone else's opinion even though I may not agree. It's up to everyone to decide whether the risk of an accident, suicide, etc. versus violent victimization is worth owning a gun to them. I don't believe that it's realistic to rid the planet of guns but we can implement better gun control. Like a4a I think the notion of semis and automatics out in the public is absurd. I think that guns theoretically should be limited to the police and military (that's a whole other can of worms to open up) which will keep black market prices high but it is legal and part of our constitutional rights so that is not likely to happen. Some of the Brady organzations have come up with, IMO, good gun control policies but it's a hot topic in the U.S. and the NRA is a big and powerful organization. BTW, did anyone see American Dad last night?
Moose Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Guns are neccessary around here. Everyone has them, we have to protect cattle, horses, ourselves.... When your nearest neighbor is 2 miles away, you never know who's at your door at 1am..... Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Keep them locked up, educate your kids about them...... I have been shot with a deer rifle. My step-dad got drunk and pissed, I was running away from him. He caught me in my left elbow, spun me around and I fell to the ground. He thought he had killed me. Felt stupid about it afterwards. He's held me at gun point thousands of times, that was the one and only time he let one go. I show and tell to my kids....they won't get near them unless I'm there with them.

Moai Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Everyone I know owns a gun. I own lots of them, from small pistols to an assault rifle. I don't hunt, but I'd like to learn, it sounds fun. I don't have a lot in common with the men I know who do hunt, though. With children around proper gun safety is key, but that is true of anyone who has one. You don't leave them around where a small child can get ahold of it, or where your hammered friends can mess with it, either. Common sense usually handles all of that, though.
SmoochieFace Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Good lord man, is this a case for or against gun ownership? It's called *family values*.
JS17 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I don't hunt, but I'd like to learn, it sounds fun. Out of curiocity, can I ask why?
Moai Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Out of curiocity, can I ask why? Sure! There are actually quite a few reasons... 1. I eat meat, and it seems somewhat hypocritical of me to have never actually killed what I have eaten myself. 2. The thrill of the hunt. From what the hunters I know tell me, there is nothing like it. 3. The taste. I have eaten elk, antelope, moose, and deer and they all taste awesome. Game animals don't have the fat that beef does, so I hear it is better for you. I have eaten fowl, too, and it is also amazing. Goose especially. 4. Going shooting with friends is a blast. Combining that with camping for a week sounds like a really good time. 5. I'd like to try bow hunting as well, but you have to crawl before you can walk and hunting with a firearm is great practice, I am told.
Moose Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 It's called *family values*. Cute.....real cute.....
