But there's always been a meaning or a reason, or an explanation, maybe they are making it up on the spot either way I'm not asking if there's actual meaning or not rather if me asking about the gift comes off as obnoxious.

I'm sure that more than one answer has been made up on the spot under duress.   

If you are fine with knowing that you're sometimes putting people under duress or making them uncomfortable,  carry on as you are.

That's very possible when you question the gift. For example rather than saying it was on sale or they bought it for someone else, they may come up with something like that. Like the bamboo story.

In all honesty, this is another of your vague questions.  What brought you to question your behaviour?   Did someone call you out on it?

That's obnoxious for sure.   Nobody will enjoy having to explain to somebody why they picked out this gift. It seems extremely ungracious to make them jump through hoops to amuse you when they went to the trouble of getting you a present. 

 If there's a "special" story that the person wants to share, they will tell the recipient of the gift.

Not a test because I don't judge them on what they give me, even if they say i just wanted you to have it- end of. Im cool with that. Just intrigued.
