Got a new haircut, but there is just one problem

Recommended Posts

I am so embarrassed to post this but I have no one else to talk to about it. Because friends and family will just say I look fine when I know I don’t. I recently just got a haircut and got bangs. I already have thin hair and didn’t realize getting this type of haircut was going to highlight my bald spot that is forming on my hairline.

I thought that if I got a haircut I would finally feel confident enough to stop wearing stupid hats and beanies at work. I’ve been covering up my hair for a year because I’m self conscious of my thinning hair and big forehead. But now this haircut has literally showcased what I’ve been trying to hide. Now I have to see everybody at work and my one coworker who knows all my insecurities for some reason will tease and make fun of it, I just know it. He has made fun of literally every insecurity I have about myself, I don’t even know how he knows I’m insecure about them. I really really really want to stop wearing a hat so bad but now I am so sad that it shows my bald spot. I’m only 22.

I honestly don’t even care anymore I just don’t want to be humiliated and picked on by my 35 year old coworker who I know is going to make me wanna cry on Monday. Please any advice is appreciated.

Make an appointment with your physician for a complete physical evaluation, including metabolic and hormonal tests.

Ask for a referral to a dermatologist. Does anyone in your family have this?

While hairstyles are an excellent lifestyle tool to deal with this, see if there is an underlying physical problem.

Just re alopecia, the hair can grow back again primarily by looking after yourself properly

keep your stress levels under control, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water and eat healthily,

As suggested by @Wiseman2, see your doctor to rule out any health issues that might be causing a temporary and fixable problem.  Anemia and thyroid issues are two conditions that can result in hair loss that can be reversible.

Unfortunately, hair loss is often genetic.  While less common, women can also suffer permanent hair loss, sometimes starting very early.

Find the way of combing/brushing your hair into a style that is the least revealing of the thinning/balding areas.  There are various products that can help disguise the loss as well, such as fibers/powder in various hair color shades.  While not perfect, they can help you feel less self-conscious.

Your co-worker or anyone else who makes fun of you is an insensitive jerk.  Ignore him as much as possible.

Yep agree with all advice. I had bad anemia (unknown to me at the time) and it did cause my hair to thin. The specialist I went to said it was age related with forceful authority and I was freaked out. That said, while I am much older than you, my hair is better than ever now. Got the anemia under control as a first step. I let my hair grow our from shoulder length to mid back over the pandemic and am shocked at how good it looks as I too have thin hair. Also stopped getting it colored and stopped using any heat on it - it was easy to do during WFH and my hair air dries ok)….I don’t know if color and heat even played a role but I feel au natural is healthier, which is my priority for my hair.
I hope you can get an appmt and definitely keep your stress under control. When my situation happened my marriage also had imploded and I think that was a contributing factor but not the sole cause. Believe me I understand how stressful it is.

@CuriousCassie

For the past year or so, as a side business I've been cutting and styling hair.  I may even get into full time, who knows.

But anyway, I've been reading, watching videos and learning about all sorts of techniques for hiding and treating a bald spot.

Massage works great, spend 15 a day massaging the spot, it will stimulate hair follicles and allow the hair to grow back if it's not too far gone.  It may take some time to see results but it's been known to work.

Where is the bald spot?  I'm going to guess it's on your hairline which isn't uncommon believe it or not.

If it is, even with bangs, there are different styles that might cover it, like side sweeping your bangs for example versus straight down your forehead.

Also, there are hair thickening products and texturizers that will make your hair appear thicker and more voluminous than it normally is.  I use these products myself and they work!

I suggest visiting a professional hair stylist, he/she will be able to see the spot and give you tips how to disguise it and advise how to maintain healthy hair and scalp so you don't lose more hair!

For example, did you know pulling hair back in a tight pony tail will cause you to lose hair along the hairline?

I wish we could PM, I'd really like to see a picture and help you if possible, health and beauty (hair and skin) is something I have a real passion for.

Good luck!

Is this even allowed in today's work places?  Tell him to stop or you'll be forced to go to HR.

Forgot to add, there are hair powders you can apply that come in various shades that will disguise the spot.

Joan Rivers makes a very popular one, it's sold on Amazon.com.

When applied properly it looks very natural, and will blend in with the rest of your hair.

So many things you can do, you don't need to resort to wearing a hat and for goodness sake, tell your co-worker to knock it off or you will report him to HR for harassment.

That's just unacceptable.

Yep traction alopecia! Good call on citing that as I also avoid tight, high pony tails after going through this issue. Now that my hair filled back in, don't want to risk it!
