There isn't a written record of things at my job. Can I work around that?

Recommended Posts

in my job, my boss often ask astonished when she expects me to remember things from a few weeks ago and I cannot remember them. Conversations or assignments you ask me about which I cannot have any recollection of at all.

but I feel that I just need a written record of things in order to make the job easier. But if I cannot get one is there anything else I can do to not alienate my boss in this way because she just seems astonished that I cannot remember anything that she talks about after a couple of weeks?

You need to start mastering the art of diarizing items in your calendar or finding a reminder system that keeps you up to date. It's your responsibility to be aware of any details or items that come up regarding areas that are assigned to you and that includes any conversations or info that may be important to any decisions you make or issues you forward to your boss. Use a calendar.

I can keep a book with me and write paragraphs of what I did but I felt if I did that then I would look like I wasn't working and writing paragraphs instead.  But is that okay?

It's doubtful she's "astonished". If you need a work related report, take notes.

No, use a calendar system on your phone or outlook and keep it short, point form or phrases only. Paragraphs will slow you down.

Oh okay, but that won't work though, because I need to explaint to myself exactly what the assignment was and what I did.  If I use point form, then I will be just as clueless as to what it was, as I am with her, when she uses point form when she asks me about it.

Can you write everything down what you were taught in great details immediately after finish your shift?

That's a good idea, I can do that.  As long as it doesn't look bad to go to my bag, pull out a small book and read from it everytime they ask me, or I could try writing it in my phone, but I suck at phone typing.

Are you saying that you have absolutely no recollection of conversations and assignments that you've had/performed within the past few weeks, and even her discussing them with you doesn't jog your memory?  Because if so, I would honestly suggest seeing a doctor, because that doesn't sound normal to completely forget about these things after such a short span of time and to need such detailed written records to remember anything.  (I could understand if this was something you did a year ago, but two/three weeks isn't much time.)  Do you have memory problems in other aspects of your life, aside from work?

Well once she explains to them to me in detail I remember them but I need paragraphic detail pretty much and descriptions of exactly what I did, then it jogs my memory.

But she seems kind of frustrated that she has to explain a lot rather than use only two or three word descriptions of the projects which I cannot remember and need actual detailed descriptions of what exactly was done.

I have been having some other memory problems as well but the doctor said it was because of my insomnia and it should go away once we figure out how to fix that.

Start keeping a notebook and writing things down.  This is part of basic organization.  If you don't want people at work to see you sitting down writing because it will look like you're not working, then write in the book after work or during breaks or something.

I can do that.  Thanks.  But will it look sloppy of me if I have to keep going to get the notebook to reference it, every time the supervisor asks me about something from before?

Well my gf says my insomnia is probably because in my job, I have to work at a computer almost the whole day, and it's the blue light.  However, I do where glasses for it that is supposed to block the blue light out.  She says it doesn't block it all out.  Do they make glasses that block ALL of it out though, if this is likely the problem?

@ironpony  your girlfriend is not a psychologist, or a sleep specialist and nor is she an expert on optometry.   All she's doing is giving you uneducated assumptions.

Take your questions to people who know the answers

Make out a process report with whatever tasks you're responsible for and what you accomplish.
