Is it true that my boss is recording what we say?

Employees at my job are saying that the boss installed microphones all over to hear everything going on, or at least that is what two supervisors have said to everyone.  But is that true, since I thought that was illegal, unless maybe there are exceptions?

Well it's illegal when I looked it up just now, but I don't get why other workers believe what they hear like that, and have to get everyone stirred up on something illegal and unlikely.
