I have been at this new job for about 3 months in a  professional position. In this time I feel like I’ve gotten along with everyone for the most part and presented the image of someone who is hard working and dedicated.

So my coworker approached me today saying “your new nickname is ‘Pikachu’”. It was such a strange nickname since it’s coming out of nowhere. I did tell him once that I like playing Pokémon video games but that was two weeks ago. When I asked him why he’s calling me that, he laughed it off.

what is he implying by calling me this nickname? and does it hurt my professional image? Or is it simply all in good fun and he’s just calling me a nerd?

I mean pikachu is an AWESOME Pokémon, but like we are in a professional setting. And I’m just confused haha

It depends.  Does everyone on the team have a nickname?  If so, it's a mark of acceptance and potentially a compliment.

I work in tech and it's common for us to have nicknames, strange avatars and the like.
