Whats wrong with grabbing a coffee and walking around the mall?  A first date, the event is the other person.  I laugh at people that go to fancy restaurants or concerts on first dates, there's a 80% chance you'll never even see that person again.

Only speaking for myself here: nothing wrong with grabbing a coffee. I take issue with walking around the mall. When I'm getting to know someone, I like to sit opposite them and have a proper conversation with them. Having a coffee is conducive to that. Walking around a mall is not.

I had a "walking date" with someone once and it was a total waste of time. It was obvious he was just doing it to check a box (I met him at a speed-dating event). He had more important things to do and didn't even have time to sit down and have a decent conversation. He also clearly felt buying a coffee would be a waste of money.

It doesn't bother me, sitting across and basically interviewing each other is what gets on my nerves, I turn into a different person and usually so does my date.

I'm not into interviews either. Just good old conversation.

But it makes sense to do what works for you.
