Did you ever ask him? Because if you and other employees have not asked, he might not be aware that such a source is non-existent or hard to find.

No I haven't asked him but he hasn't asked for a test lately.  We've been very busy with things, but if I ask him that will most likely just get his mind racing about how to make it more complicated I feel, so I maybe if he doesn't ask, then I shouldn't it?

Exactly.   If you're getting your tests done on time and he's not complaining about the delay in results,  don't worry.
