Hey everyone! I was wondering how you would respond to this situation.

You're in a college class with someone that claims they like you. Since its COVID times, your classes are held via Zoom conferencing. You had your camera on for about the first 2 minutes of class and then turned it off. Half an hour later, you get a text from the guy telling you you look "very pretty today". You tell them your camera is off and he says "oh sorry".

But he did see you. And he thinks you're pretty.

Do you like him or do you think the comment was too forward?

How you react depends on how you feel about him.   If he gives you the creeps, ignore his message.   If you like him, then say 'thank you'

I'm wondering what the real issue is.

Do you think or suspect he lied when saying you looked pretty?  Because your camera was off, he never actually saw your pic and it was some sort of pick up line?

What's the issue?

It is interesting that he replied "oh sorry" when you told him your camera was off, so perhaps it was just a line.

I was thinking that "oh, sorry" was him being totally embarrassed thinking he must have somehow texted the wrong girl, since the one he thought he texted was visible for a couple of minutes, but this one was claiming she just wasn't visible, period.

It's weird that the OP said that. Poor dude. He must be dying. Pretty sure he won't be trying this again. 🤐

ETA: or, wait. Maybe he actually did text the wrong girl!

He maybe:

-Saw you for two minutes, found you attractive and wanted to text you.

-Texted the wrong person. It happens, whoops. lol

- A player who texted all of the girls in your class to tell them they are pretty.

The question is how do you feel about him? Do you want to pursue it any further? If you like him enough, maybe try messaging him about school or such and see what is what.

You just said that your camera was on for the first two minutes.  So why the "camera was off" comment?  He could have seen you in those two minutes, right?

He saw you the first two minutes and thought you were pretty.

It took him a half hour to get up the courage to text you that "You're pretty."

You then immediately shot him down by saying your camera was off.

By this time he felt silly about trying to explain that he'd seen you in the first two minutes because then it's obvious that it took him all that time to get up the courage to compliment you.

Embarrassed, he shut the conversation down by saying, "I'm sorry!" Because that was the easiest way to get out of a awkward situation. He didn't have much time to think of a different answer so just jumped on that one.

Up until a certain point you can. I went back later and it was too late to edit.

I would have said, "your camera crashed because it could not handle all that beauty!"

Maybe he had you confused with another girl.

Now we're getting Covid-era questions from scenarios that few of us have ever experienced.

When I saw your title, I thought it was going to be a self-esteem issue where you were sure your camera was misrepresenting YOU  when the guy was inspired to compliment your appearance.

I think he really did text the wrong girl. I imagine that, if he had intended to text OP, he would have noticed her camera was off for 30 minutes and should have realized that she would likely assume the compliment was not directed at her.

I actually feel sorry for OP because it sucks to be in the situation where someone's paying you a compliment, but may actually have meant to say it to someone else. If you assume he was talking to you and then it turns out he wasn't, that can be very humiliating.

Hey OP,

If he was simply content with you two being classmates, he wouldn't have invested the energy to comment on your looks.  He did this because, he finds you..attractive.  Simple as that.  Forget how we'd respond.  Just pay attention to how you responded.  To me, it seems like you felt the comment was too forward and you felt uncomfortable and if that's your initial reaction..you probably should leave this alone.

But if you're inquiring about this, then given what you two currently share right now, just ask yourself, what do you want and would you be interested in something more with him?  From there, proceed accordingly;  get to know him, talk, see where it goes etc.
