Admitting that you like someone early on, bad or good idea?

We've only known one another in passing for a month or so but there's something I liked almost immediately. They've given hints of interest themselves. 

Logically it says good but then would it soon too "blunt" as to be off putting.

You shouldn't admit or state you like someone, you should show then by your actions. Flirt or show interest and get a feel for their interest back. Then you ask them out.
