deepthinking Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 as I am not a regular cook-entertainer, I need input warnings etc I think stews are good as they are prepared earlier in the day, ready, not into deserts, not even sure what they like. We are 3, one man one woman and me a woman, all friends. It is the man who is the unknown. I know they like big portions, but … perhaps I should ask what he really likes or dislikes

You don't want to make a meat dinner for a vegetarian, shrimp for somebody with a shellfish allergy or pasta for somebody who can't eat wheat / gluten. Stews are a bit heavy for summer. Try a casserole . . . same make ahead ease but not as heavy. You should have some appetizer but it can be as simple as cheese & crackers or chips & dip and a something sweet for dessert, slice & bake cookies work or a store bought cake, even just a pint of ice cream would be fine but you need to offer something. It's part of being a gracious hostess. 1

Ellener Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 If you have a see-through glass bowl there's a real easy pretty dessert: *pour cool liquid jello over pieces of sponge cake/drained canned fruit, set in fridge. Could do that night before *top with thick instant vanilla pudding, I omit half a cup of the milk *final layer of whipped heavy cream and sprinkled grated chocolate It's the easy version of the english trifle, and can have lots of variations with the fruit/jello and pudding flavours/decoration!
