When should I tell him I'm looking for something serious?

Agree, and when disclosing what your intention is (serious long term relationship) make sure you phrase it in the generic, not specific to him.

This is why the disconnect I think.  Many folks believe it's specific to them, and freak out thinking you're pushing for a "relationship" prematurely, too invested too soon.  

But it's not about that or shouldn't be.  You're speaking in the generic, what you are eventually wanting when you meet the right person.  

That takes time, like months sometimes to know someone is the "right" person.

So no, nothing wrong with telling a guy you seek serious, just make sure you discuss in general terms, not specific to him.

I realize it's moot with this guy since you broke it off, but wanted to chime in with my $.02 anyway, as this is a pretty hot topic for many.
