In my opinion the amount of cruelty a person uses when breaking up with an SO is proportionate to how difficult they judge the SO is going to make it. The SO that just nods their head and says "Ok, have a good life" gets a more respectful send off then the SO who cries and begs with puppy eyes. The later behavior hardens the heart.
