What are you doing these days?

Recommended Posts

I'm normally in the US this time of the year. It feels really weird not having the freedom still to do that.

Cases are jumping again - we had 740 new cases in my state, over the last twenty-four hours. So I'm still not doing much. We did go to the beach on Sunday, a quiet end of it, but I wore my mask when people were moving too close for comfort. I'm also still wearing it in stores, not going to the movies, or eating in restaurants.

Same here... it seems I'm the only one wearing a mask in most of the stores I go into, but I really don't care.  I'm not ready to shed my mask even though I have had both of my Pfizer shots.  It really isn't that much of an inconvenience to wear it and I feel it protects me from anyone that hasn't been vaccinated.

As for restaurants, my girlfriend and I are attempting to compromise on this, so instead of sitting down and eating there, we are ordering a "to go" or "carry out" order and eating at home.

In regards to movies, I've been streaming movies for free from various sources through my ROKU.  I'm not going to run out of movies to watch anytime soon -- and the popcorn at my place is so much cheaper!!

I admit, I'm fully vaxxed and I have let up somewhat when it comes to certain things. I'll dine in a minimally populated restaurant (I live in a small area, so most places I eat there aren't many people).

I can meet with my other friends to play board game night, unmasked of course. Again, not many people sitting in a room. Going on dates of course, and if we're going to kiss, it's going to have to be unmasked. LOL

"V" (girlfriend) and I went down to our local Motor Vehicle Department to get our "Real ID" this morning.  Our state has implemented a  March 3, 2023 deadline.  The line wasn't that long and we got through the process without any problems.  I went on the website to make sure we had all the documents we needed before we went down there.

I told "V" let's go ahead and get this taken care of and not wait until the last minute.

We are both hopeful that the delta variant will not spread in such a way that everything will be locked down, again.  We really want to resume our travels/flying and complete our "bucket list".

While we were waiting in line, there was this "Karen" type woman arguing with one of the clerks.  She was trying to make a scene because she wasn't getting her way.  A supervisor did come out and tried to reason with her, but that only made her get louder and more obnoxious.  It was somewhat entertaining as the Motor Vehicle people don't bend the rules for anyone.  She was still going off on them when we left.

One of my rescue orchids is pushing out a new leaf, remarkably. I thought it was dying and repotted it last week in fresh soil after removing any dead roots, finding one healthy root. I am so inspired and totally beside myself. Nature has the most incredible way of recovering, regenerating itself and making something beautiful out of so little.

I have settled back in my office yesterday after 16 months working from home. I'm happy my living room is again a living room and my work and home are again seperated.

Life is almost back to normal here,  we went from 4000 cases a day to 63 cases a day thanks to a high percentage of population being vaccinated.

"V" and I were asked to keep an eye on my neighbor's house while he and his wife went out of town for a few days.  He told us we could use his pool.  It is this HUGE wondrous salt water pool.  It's got embedded lights that change colors, jets that self clean the pool and basically everything.

So we went over there and started swimming, then I came up with the idea of skinny dipping.  So we shed our suits and played in the water.  Eventually we put our suits back on and came home.  Then the thought dawned on me... "What if he had camera(s) watching the pool??"

After spending last year feeling so smug about how well COVID has been managed here in Australia, we've now fallen into a hole.  The vaccine rollout has been a debacle with low supplies, fear of side effects of AstraZeneca  (one person per million has died from related blood clots)  and complacency partly fueled by everyone feeling so safe.

Now Delta has crossed our shores.  Because it's so much more contagious, lockdown isn't as efficient as it was before so we're just aiming to try and keep a lid on it until certain level of vaccinations have been reached (between 50% and 70% depending on what day I listen to the news).    I'm all for vaccinations and lockdowns, but even I am starting to wonder just how long this can be kept up.

Thankfully both husband and daughter can work and study remotely.   My heart breaks for those who are unemployed or suffering from the isolation.

I have a dear friend who lives in Australia. It has amazed me how normally they have continued to live their lives - until now. It would seem that you have not escaped the Delta variant and I’m hoping that your lockdown and vaccination efforts will make a difference soon.

I just won an on-line auction for a beautiful pearl and turquoise necklace for my girlfriend for her birthday.  Her birthday isn't until October, but I didn't expect to win the auction.  I put in a real low bid and no one bid against me, so I got it for a really low price.

Oh well... I'll wrap it and put it in a drawer until her birthday arrives.

Initially she wanted a new phone for her upcoming birthday, but changed her mind.

I'm rehabilitating a bearded dragon hatchling in a spare enclosure. It's hard work but worth it. I found it in a local petstore with horrific husbandry (not enough UBV and it was too cold). It's missing one toe, had stuck shed (likely contributing to the missing toe) and couldn't lift its head. Looking a bit better today after Day 4 and moving to solids soon. Starting to look more like a dragon. I don't know why these stores accept animals they can't support or care for.

I brought the first load of furniture/boxes from my girlfriend's apartment to my home.  Everything went well... no problems, nothing got scratched or broke (so far... so good).  "V" still has more to pack, and I have more of her furniture to haul... but we are off to a good start.

Neither one of us has lived with anyone in 25 years, so its going to be a bit of an adjustment for both of us.

We've been doing a two weeks on/two weeks off (living together) for a couple of months as a test before we attempt to move in together.  Our experiment has gone fairly well with no real problems.  My girlfriend's only complaint is she gains weight during her two weeks here because she really enjoys my cooking/baking.  So I may have to adjust some meal preparation and throw in a couple "salad nights" here and there, but that feels like a very minor problem.

We have until Sept. 30 to clear everything out and give her small apartment a good cleaning.

Wish me luck!

Sheesh, I hate moving.  I bought a house a few months ago and I had forgotten how much I hate the process!  She's lucky to have you.  My guy has done a ton of things for me too throughout the process.

Now I'm  waiting for it to cool off so I can enjoy the new paver patio I had put in next to my deck in my lovely fenced yard.  That will make it all worth it!

Moving doesn't bother me that much... I've done it quite a bit in my life, when I was more nomadic.

It is a bonus that "V" doesn't have any real heavy furniture.

I scheduled my annual Prostate exam, yesterday.  I have a paternal Uncle that has prostate cancer and this puts me at an increased risk, so I go every year.  My uncle is suffering horribly and wouldn't be if he had gone for an annual check.  I am not going to make that mistake.

This is just a reminder to all men 50 and over (45 and over if you are at higher risk) to get your annual prostate exam and PSA blood test.

Luckily, (in my state) there is a mobile facility that goes around the state and does both the PSA blood test and digital exam for an affordable price.

@Blind-Sided You mentioned you were turning 50 in a couple of months, so I wanted to issue a "friendly reminder" to you about this men's health issue/problem.

Stay healthy to all of us older guys on Loveshack!!

So for some reason I had my first exam in my thirties. Not sure if they changed the guidelines or something. The doc was this bald-headed sharp-witted guy that look like Dr Romano from ER. So I do the whole bend over the exam table Fletch thing. And I swear the guy was using his whole arm. He gets it done, snaps off the glove, and says "well that ought to dissuade you from doing anything that would land you in prison or subject to a body cavity search".

I didn't miss a beat and said "will you at least pay my cab ride home and call me in the morning? I mean I didn't even get dinner much less a cocktail out of this"

@Mrin  No... I can't say there was any humor with my doctor, but he does tell me that everything is OK... see you in a year.

A few weeks later I get the blood test results from my PSA test and I file them away.  So far all of my PSA values have been quite low, which puts my mind at ease.

Glad you are well, also... this is quick and simple check to help extend our lives and alleviate any needless suffering.

Yep... I should probably think about that.  Hard to believe... I'm going to be officially "old" soon.  LOL

One day I was talking to an older Hindu gentleman that I consider quite wise.  I was complaining about getting old and he replied "It is better than the alternative."  So I embrace my getting "older", and I keep up with the appropriate "older guy" maintenance.

I'm dying my girlfriend's hair today.  It is time, her gray is really starting to show through.

I'm actually getting kind of good at it.  Thank you Clairol (Nice & Easy)!!
