slubberdegullion Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I'm not referring to the love you have for a sibling or parents, friends or grandfolks. I mean the draw to the opposite sex. (Note for my gay/lesbian friends: this does not exclude you, I simply mean the love that the Greeks referred to as "eros.") M. Scott Peck, the recently deceased author of The Road Less Travelled, defined love as: The will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's or another's spiritual growth. Now, Peck was a Christian writer so he tends to see things from that perspective. But I believe he makes a good point. If you remove the word "spiritual" from the quote, then that makes his definition more universal. East Indian writer and academic Dr. Patanjali Dev Nayar writes that being in love and maintaining a loving relationship are two different things. (http://tweens.indiatimes.com/articleshow/346285.cms) He's right, of course; being in love is a state of emotion, and maintaining a loving relationship has little to do with emotions and much to do with making a decision. Often, though, we confuse the two. We search for ready-made answers or look to the stars or even web sites to see if we and our respective mates are destined for disaster or bliss. (Take a stab at this! It's cute!) We read books by self-anointed experts and listen to speakers who we think may know something we don't. What is love to you? What makes it work?
elijahBailey Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 for me it's the feeling that you experience from the time she starts to undress until the moment you climax
lindya Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I like this definition by George Nathan. "A man reserves his true and deepest love not for the species of woman in whose company he finds himself electrified and enkindled, but for that one in whose company he may feel tenderly drowsy."
Jayhawks Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 love is inexplainable.. you are human, so go experience it for yourself God, its that simple:)
westernxer Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Eros is just a series of chemical reactions that reaches its peak on Valentine's. It's also a little dude with wings who likes to shoot arrows through your heart.

Outcast Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I particularly liked this in Dr. Nayar's article: We don't "fall" in love - we "rise" in love!" Real love enables, brings and gives joy and peace. It brings out the best in us, creates harmony and happiness and thus facilitates our work and adds zest to life. Here's one of my favourite articles on love. Don't let the excessive use of colour and fonts distract you; there's good information there backed up by research. http://www.relationshipsandlove.com/loving_well2.htm at the end, you'll see this - I recommend reading the whole series To learn more about companionate love, see http://www.relationshipsandlove.com/goodstuff2.htm (The Good Stuff: And How it Differs from Purely Romantic love) and http://www.relationshipsandlove.com/Companionate_And_Romantic_Love.htm (Companionate And Romantic Love: Going for Both!)
westernxer Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 There's a book by the Mexican writer Octavio Paz called "The Double Flame," which deals with the issue of love and eroticism in literature and real life. A splendid book, I might add. Enlightening, to say the least.
