PrimalInstinct Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I've been confused for my 20s even by 20-year-olds. No surprise. I have a 'baby face' as they say & I've never needed makeup. I still get IDed for lotto tickets and liquor whenever I go into the local stores and buy something. However, I am confused by a number of others as being 40+. In fact, yesterday someone asked if I remembered Peyton Place which would make me over 50. I'll admit I'm very confident & mature for my age but still. I understand the basics - looks vs persona - but I talk to the people assuming 20ish & 40ish almost as much as the other so... I just don't get the two extremes and rarely do people guess my age (early 30s).
Gaeta Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 You're one of those people who's age is hard to guess. My boyfriend is 52 and people always think he's in his 30s. It's flattering to him and nothing else, he doesn't let it define who he is, we laugh at it. When we're together people must think I'm a cougar. Who cares!

Most people are usually guessed to be older or like your husband younger than their age. I'm either or depending on the age of the people I'm dealing with
Miss Spider Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 (edited) Are you a different ethnicity then these people who are guessing younger?. It could have something to do with certain age markers being related to certain ethnicities that can throw people off. People aren’t able to notice the characteristics of aging in people with a different phenotype as well as they would their own. For example, Asian people are less likely to get wrinkles because of a thicker dermis with more collagen and melanin in their skin. This makes them more prone to hyperpigmentation from photo-aging though. This is different from Caucasian people, who often have freckles at young age. They are less prone to hyperpigmentation because they have less melanin and more prone to wrinkling. That’s just one example., but these markers can mislead people on age. chillii Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 l've had that too a lot , especially as l got older , 50s now. There's about 25 yrs difference between ages people think l am, mind you l don't mind the 30s ones haha.

I've "good genes" though as neither my parents or grandparents looked their ages, always younger.
alphamale Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 i'm 54 and some people are surprised that i'm not closer to 40 or 45....my dad also looks younger for his age
preraph Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Some people aren't paying enough attention to pick up on the other things about you besides how old you look physically. Most people give away their age by how they act and dress. Young people can spot old people pretty easily. Older people have a little more trouble nailing down younger people's ages. 1

Yet with me they can't do either. Older people assume I am closer to their age, the guy mentioned initially is in his 60s must have assumed by his remember Peyton Place comment that I had to be at least in my 50s. Younger people assume I am closer to their age, a colleague is 26 and he once said he thought I was 22. He isn't the only one for, as said, I am constantly IDed even by fellow 30 year olds when the legal age is 18. Edited February 5, 2020 by PrimalInstinct
preraph Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Sometimes people at clubs have to ID everyone in case someone is watching. I was occasionally id'd for a long time. what I'm wondering is why you're getting into age discussions with so many people. I can't remember the last time in real life that anyone asked me how old I was or vice versa.

I don't go to clubs, mostly they're a waste of time unless one's more a social+ drinker or into easy hookups (of which I'm neither, I've one drink a year). The 26 year old who thought I was 22 wasn't some bouncer anyway but a colleague who found my ID in the parking lot & made a quip about how he thought I was younger. Btw I'm not getting into "age discussions with so many people". Did you miss the part where I said a guy asked did I remember Peyton Place? That's not an age related discussion he's making an assumption I'm about his age by the comment.

I just find the two extremes interesting. Most people are either judged too old or too young for their age. I am both & it relates to the age of people more than it does me, seemingly. thefooloftheyear Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 (edited) You are thinking people are putting more thought into this than they really are....for what reason I have no idea... Most people aren't judged older or younger....Typically they are judged for what they are....Some people(particularly guys) like to tell women they look younger, not because they actually do, but because it gets a rise out of those women, and they can amuse themselves over it... LivingWaterPlease Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 PrimalInstinct, some people are just way off in their assessment of a person's age, I've noticed. Probably has nothing to do with you, more to do with their age-assessment-ability! 1

TFY Oh I don't think they're putting much thought into it. When people make assumptions it's based on little fact & thus pretty basic. I'm just amused. Btw I don't know how I am judged for what I am when I am early 30s, confused as 20s and 40+. And I do look younger, thanks, seeing as it's not just men that say younger but women too. The 'baby face' comment at the top ... due to good genes & good health practices, same reason why my grandmother didn't look her actual age until her 80s.
Malin889 Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 (edited) I am in my early 40s and people always think I’m in my early 30s... I always say, I’m so not, but thank you! And I don’t tell them my real age, they can guess. Edited February 5, 2020 by Malin889
mortensorchid Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I am in the same boat. When I was 18 people thought I was in my twenties (which you want them to do when you're that age). And I'm 45 now and I still get carded. Not a wrinkle or a crack, just a few grey hairs here and there show my age. I let people guess my age and they are blown away when I tell them. They ask what the secret is, I say good genes and exercise is plastic surgery for poor people.
Artdeco Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 (edited) There is scientific evidence that people always think that they look younger than they actually are. It’s probably because they still feel young/younger or whatever. ....there’s also scientific evidence that people – when they meet new people – always categorize new people more into or closer to their own age group. This means that if you meet somebody in their 20s they will always guess your age closer to 20-30, even if you’re 50. And if they’re in their 50s and you’re in your 50s, their guess will be more accurate. It’s an “ingroup/outgroup thinking” thing. Just the way the brain works Edited February 11, 2020 by Artdeco

I don't "think" I look younger I've been IDed as younger & told I'm younger than I am. My grandmother didn't look her age until her 80s. And the people I'm talking about aren't "new" I've know them for months.
