This thread seems to be a reflection of what's going on in the real world, with people gradually getting more aware of the impact of the virus as their own environment or circumstances change with the domino effect. Big metropoles are definitely more affected than little towns or remote areas, from what I hear. Probably because smaller places have stronger community support and close-knit links. There are stressed health professionals on their knees completely overwhelmed with work, primary and secondary school teachers having to hastily prepare home packs for their students yet keeping the school open to care for children of key workers, students seeing all exams scrapped, so many people who can't or can't afford to work from home, people losing their jobs or life-savings, the psychological effects of complete self isolation / quarantine (a real thing, as this article from this week's Lancet testifies, for those who doubt it), a new culture of 'no touching', lots of uncertainty and chaos, hyped up individualism, OCDs due to germs, people not being able to attend burials of loved ones... But: - China has closed all its temporary coronavirus hospitals for lack of new cases. - huge advances in science / virology / chemistry - probably more widespread use of telemedicine - hopefully more awareness in person hygiene and cleanliness. - maybe a shift in realising we can still be productive at work even when we don't work as much, all we need to do is zoom in on what matters. - a lot more community solidarity - closer family bonds. From personal experience, after initial shock, I'm finding out that 3 days into quarantine, I really, really like my kids. We can hear everyone outside having fun, going about their day, etc and the first 48h were really tricky, but we're getting into the swing of things with dance sessions (2 metres apart, of course), art sessions, some homework and time on electronics when I'm working. Swings and roundabouts. 2

Don't quote me on that. It's just a suspicion but I can't shake it off. Considering that the virus has impacted China's own economy so intensely that it has caused the country's first economic downturn since the Cultural Revolution in the 1970s, that would be quite the Pyrrhic victory for China. I posted about this upthread. In other words, this suspicion just makes no sense. Shaking it off is a good idea. 3 1

Again, you don't know who does or does not have it and being in a hospital environment, where sick people would be going and not tested, puts you at risk. I'm surprised you haven't been issued a mask at least. Or, have you? A cardiology floor with elective procedures is not a high risk area. The ER or primary care are high risk areas. Obviously, there will be some risk no matter what. We only wear masks if we take care of patients on airborne or droplet precautions. The last time I wore a mask was when I was pulled to a floor and had a patient with active TB. I have some masks at home actually, but I don't expect to be given a mask unless I take care of a patient with coronavirus or another illness that require a mask. 1

sothereiwas Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 I don't really do anxiety I guess. My panic-er is probably broken too. On a bright note: https://medium.com/@codeorg/supporting-our-community-during-school-closures-47971b34eeda Code.org is planning to help students stay afloat during the COVID scare. So that's good in theory. I'll check it out later, if anyone is looking at it, opinions would be welcome.

I'm currently composing a memorial hymn in the style of John Tavener, it's generally classical music ( 'programme music' ) I write. I'm a pianist and I sing ( getting older though, starting to turn that into a comedy act! ) There's a whole thread on here with people's favourite songs/song in your heart today! I listen to that a lot
Ellener Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Adrian Monk is on H&I channel all day, set in SF it's about a detective with compulsion to clean and severe anxiety disorder and set in SF, my favourite city. Perfect! 1

Ikon of Light by John Tavener is just what many people could use to relax and release the stress built over the past few months. 4 minutes ago, Ellener said: it's generally classical music ( 'programme music' ) Forgot to mention that the soundtrack of the movie Interview With The Vampire is still one of my favorites, and the soundtrack for Chariots of Fire.
