Maybe a thread without the word Corona?

I've mostly kept a cool head. Sure, it's off the absolute charts scary, but it won't do me any good to panic.

It's never really been all about the deaths of the older people, it's been about the overload on the healthcare system.  So if now it's both young and old, we are screwed more than we were.  Trump needs to shut this country down ASAP and get on with it.

By the way, Major Merrick said her county just got shut down.  Does anyone know where she's located?

I'm in the Rural Mid-South (Bible Belt.)  I won't specify beyond that.  Close enough to a population center where there's lots of work within an hour's commute, but far enough out to live around trees, rivers, hills, and plenty of agriculture.

Our sheriff planned for a shutdown as soon as the first cases were confirmed in the nearby city.  Our county's population had been notified of the plan well in advance.  It showed up about mid-morning today, and we'd all assumed it would happen sometime this week.  Our sheriff's goal is to keep it out of our county as much as possible, but also to contain the inevitable civil unrest and crime that happens in urban areas when things go sour.  After out-of-county folks came in causing trouble (including robbing the main grocery store) everybody was ready to shut things down.  The city nearby is not shut down at all.  People are still out, wandering around.  Some robberies and assaults, an arson, and general mischief.  No curfew at all.  Yet.  And we don't know what craziness will happen if the city shuts down.

IDK if we are the only county in the area that will be shutting down, but we're the first to do so.  It is in our nature to be proactive, and other rural counties tend to follow our lead.  We'd rather handle things in-house before everybody gets sick.  And we'd rather have our own checkpoints than deal with State Police or National Guard.  It makes sense the way we live.  I'm proud of my husband and my GF#2 for their service to our community, but I'm also worried at how overworked they'll be.  He's keeping up with his job (mostly online atm) and working almost full-time for our county.  He called me and told me he won't be coming home tonight - he's out helping his people adjust to their shifts and the new routine they're all facing.

Man, this stuff is getting stressful....😖

Doesn't Wife#4 also work with your husband??  Or is she in a different department??

Just had a look at my activity timeline and freaked myself out with the ridiculous number of posts I made on this thread. Completely out of whack (sorry @gaius...).

Tbf it's helped keep me sane.

Quarantine sucks. Being stuck indoors with one 'suspected case' and one tearful 10yo while trying my best to work sucks. It's good saying it, instead of pretending everything is nice and rosey all the time. I'm super lucky in all other ways so not complaining, but also have to say things as they are to keep my mental health.

I've had a couple of people questioning how 'sick' my boy is - as if I would deliberately choose to lock myself up with my kids for no reason. People can be strange sometimes...

Anyway. Good luck to those quarantining by choice or by force, for those who can still go out a little please enjoy the fresh air for the rest of us!

Well I’m laid off as of today,

The reason was “downsizing due to the Coronavirus”

what a pile of bollocks...

Hasn't Trump promised you employment insurance in case something like that happens?  Can you make sure they put that reason on your dismissal slip.

Sorry to hear that, amaysn. Social distancing virtual hugs.

She works with my husband both at their company (different department) and in our community (same command.)  She's a skilled squad leader and badly needed, but she's home right now - her baby is due next month, so she's in a high risk category.

That sucks!  I'm betting that's going to be a common story pretty soon, especially for folks in the service industry.  Are you laid off for good, or just furloughed?

You're in good company with millions of people. Sucks, but that's a hard blow for everyone. That's the price we're all paying for saving pennies with Chinese stuff. It's the decision to mass manufacture there and even outsource services.

Thank you ladies!  I’m not sure if I’ll be hired back when this whole thing blows over but I’m not counting on it.  The thing that really got me was how the women I worked with seemed happy about me leaving while the men were all very supportive and kind.   One even asked to take me to lunch as he carried all my things I packed up and put them in my car.  But the women?  Just so happy that they couldn’t even hide it.

Meh, I’m probably better off.  Now I don’t need to go in the public as much.

That’s exactly what my dismissal slip said.  “Downsizing due to the Coronavirus”

@amaysngrace  You've got a much more positive attitude than I would in your circumstances.  I hope you've got some money in reserve....but even if you do, going into unemployment unexpectedly is no fun.  I hope this thing doesn't last long, and we get back to normal.  It is interesting, though, how hard times show you who your real friends are.  I suspect our society will be changed in more than one way because of the virus, and I think people's true colors are going to show.

Yep, true colours are already showing through.  The greedy are obvious in their greed and the kind are obvious in their kindness.

This is all moving so fast that it's freaking me out. I'm really worried about everyone getting laid off and the economy in general. I've decided I'm not going back out until Saturday when I go to work. I have no idea what I'll encounter there, but I work in an area that is low risk for encountering a patient with coronavirus. I went to the grocery store Monday, so I have enough to last me for awhile.

I live in one of the US largest cities, no civil unrest here and we've had several major disasters.

you make your home environment sound sinister! Why do you need checkpoints?

That's unpleasant, were they bitchy before? I expect they'll get the same thing in the next few days.

I just checked out our curbside supermarket pick up, the next available time is Saturday afternoon ( it's now late Wednesday night )

All the stores have restricted hours with someone on the door and one way in one way out. The restaurants are all now take out and delivery.

The banks are going to appointment-only lobby otherwise drive-through, and the library is asking people to order online and there will be a drive through pick up service.

People really get organised fast and well in this city! ( 'cos we've had so many natural disasters?! )

Nationally US home evictions and foreclosures are suspended, 2 navy ships are being outfitted to act as hospitals and a self-swab test kit is being prepared. Legislation passed today making the testing free, and providing sick pay.

My wife started a new playthrough of the Last of Us. Interesting game to play during these times but a masterpiece. I hope we won't have to do anymore supply runs but if we do I hope she will be okay with me going from now on or at least going with her. She has witnessed some ugliness and while I know she can more than handle herself people seem less likely to start crap with me and sadly while this is bringing out the best in some people it is also bringing out the worst in some.

I'm sorry, but I really believe this is getting blown WAY out of proportion.
My brother is back in Singapore, and was allowed to return earlier than expected. He took some photos to show me, and the difference between there and here is  night and day.

People are out,  business as usual,. The only sign of a pandemic is the masks many are wearing. This tiny nation where people are crowded in like sardines-a few hundred cases with no deaths Why?

Please take a look at this page.  There is a lot more to what's going on in Singapore,  and worldwide, for that matter, than one can see in pictures taken by a family member.

This post will be held up due to the link, but it's very educational to see the way the cases build.  Lots of info.

I believe that many of us are grasping at straws because we need comfort, but they're still straws.
